I think i may already know the answer to this but just want to check.
If i use a passive explosive hardener to boost my base explosive resist of 9% to 41% and then use a active hardener which gives 50% resist, will it give me 50% of the base 9% or of the new improved 41% ?

Resistances work the other way around. Its a 50% reduction in your vulnerabilty to a type of damage. If you have 20% resist to thermal, you'll take 80% of any thermal damage. If you were to activate a 50% hardener to thermal, that 80% would be cut in half. You are now 40% vulnernable to thermal, or a 60% resistance.
In your example. you have a 59% vulnerability to explosive after the passive hardener. A 50% active hardener would cut that in half (.59 x 0.5), leaving you with 29.5% vulnerability to explosive, or a 70.5% resistance.

it is less, as you have as tacking penalityfor fitting two items affecting the same ship attribute.
Passive modules always work first. Then the active ones.

Resistances are created from the non-resistance. Can't put it into words atm, as my brains not functioning but;
ie. A 50% hardener, on top of a base 20% resistance, will take 50% of 80% (80% is the remainder from 100%-20%). So this'd increase your resistance to 60%.
I believe extra hardeners would the also take 50% of the remainder (so 50% of 60%) - however, stacking penalties exist, but this basically means that after the first module, the effectiveness of each after decreases the more you add. I'm not sure of the calculations for however much their effeciency decreases by per module, but i'm sure a) it'll be on these forums b) someone will know  .
