Hello, all Learning skill question. Kidding.
So I've been running missions and small plexes for a while and have mostly just been using the ammo that is recommended for each rat type I'd see in the mission. No problem, but I'm now trying some harder ones in a Drake which gets a bonus to kinetic damage. So my brain has just gotten stuck on trying to figure out if lets say I'm going to run a Blood Raiders site, should I go with the recommended EM damage type since that's what their damage hole is, or would I be better off sticking with the Kinetic since I get the bonus for that? And how should I even compare how the two will work? I've been thinking on this all day and it's driving me madd!
Thanks so much!

It depends on your skills and on the resi of the individual NPC. There are those CRUs with really high resi that would love to be shot with EM dmg. Same for a few BS. In doubt activate dmg notification and test what missile works best for you.

when i flew a drake vs sansha it was better to use EM missiles, not kinetic, but i only had BC 2

Considering getting to BC4 is not such a big deal (and with BC3 it's almost even vs some of the borderline ones like mercs and angels), so we use a +20% kinetic damage bonus, use EM for blood raiders, sansha and rogue drones, KIN for everything else for simplicity's sake. Remains valid even for L5 skill, but there difference is smaller, so if you're lazy, you can afford to use only kinetic all the way. _

As stated before, it's all dependant on skills/rats etc..
But the fact that you're asking this type of question would lead me to belive you're certainly headed in the right direction overall.
Keep at it, knowledge has its rewards.

For similar situations in the future, you can actually calculate it yourself:
If you load EM, you shoot with 100% damage but the NPC's have a 20% resist to EM so you do 80% damage. (The specific resist of each NPC is listed on various websites such as Grismar's.)
If you load Kinetic you shoot 120% damage but the NPC's have a 60% resist to Kinetic so you do 48% damage.
So for this specific scenario (with made up numbers), you would want to use EM, not Kinetic.

Edited by: Culmen on 27/11/2010 20:51:31 I ran calculations on a selection of NPC battleships for each faction.
I concluded that even with max ship bonus, you are better off shooting rat specific damage type for everything except Minmatar Navy NPCs.
I don't have the specific numbers with me, I'll be posting them shortly. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Amarr navy goes into the same pot as sansha and blood raiders, so obviously you use EM. Rogue drones, also EM. You calculated for angels (which go together with minnie navy), but you completely forgot serpentis (and gallente navy), where kinetic (not thermal) usually wins. Also, for mercs and EoM, still kinetic usually wins. Obviously, for guristas and caldari navy, kinetic is the lowest resist, so again it wins by default. Since in the majority of cases of relatively commonly encountered NPCs (8 of 12) kinetic wins, doesn't it make more sense to say "use EM for sansha/bloods/drones (and amarr navy too) and kin for everyting else" ?

I ommited Serpentis and Gallente Navy for the same reason I ommited Caldari Navy and Guristas.
Both have their lowest resist on kinetic. So obviously kinetic wins out for them.
As for the minmatar vs angels , the differences are minor, but they are still counted as seperate factions, so I included them for complenist sake.
Thats said EOM and Rogue drones are an unintentional omission, I'll get to work on those. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Wow! Thanks guys. That was exactly what I needed to know. Great help. So I think IĈm getting a handle on this now. But of course with new knowledge comes new questions. Many of you mentioned to get the BC skill up, but I thought the BC (space ship command) skill only let you get into certain ships, not effect the bonuses for the ship (I thought that came from missile launcher skills, ect.). When I check in game for what the BC skill does it doesnĈt mention affecting any attributes. Does it? I know I need to work on my support skills, but I had just trained BC up to fly the drake (and cane) but no more.

If you look at the description on each Battlecruiser you'll see something like: "Battlecruiser Skill Bonus: 5% shield resistance and 5% bonus kinetic damage of heavy missiles and heavy assault missiles per level"
This is where the battlecruiser skill comes into play.
For example: If you have battlecruiser III and try to fly the drake, there will be no difference in the bonus between having Caldari Cruiser III and Caldari Cruiser V.
Increasing the battlecruiser skill will increase you bonus for the Drake, and also the Harbinger, Myrmidon, Cyclone and further more why do i even need a sig? |

I don't know how I missed that. Thanks.
