Has any one else noticed recently drones loosing lock? They seem to stop attacking their assigned target sometimes. My observation is, this sometimes happens with slow drones and a fast target, as if target gets out of some range and the drones get bored.
Details are, target was within drone range, passive set and focus fire.
Anyone else?

It has been noted that drone AI is pretty screwed up... but CCP hasnt really dont much to fix it beyond saying something like "working as intended"
So in the spirit of this game.
Working as intended, move along.

Hr, well I've noticed this in just the past couple of days, not the usual silly drone stuff.

one thing i have noticed is rep drones when trying to chase a fast ship they give up after a cycle out of sheer laziness to catch back up. also had drones engaged on a target then all decide to change their minds and attack some other guy instantly.
seems like we r back to the same issues we had years ago with ******ed drones

My sentries regularly go just about everything else than what I command them to do, like last week:
4 BS rats , 5 Warden II's , drone settings: Aggressive, focus fire = the damned sentries shot each and everyone of the BS rats at the same time... 2-1-1-1 , told 'em to shoot one and they'd manage a volley or 2 before "resetting" and again going for all of them...
This is pretty ridiculous and since the last drone "AI" changes year or so ago it sure looks like CCP ain't doing nuttin' to get it fixed. Probably would need a total rewrite of the drone code to get it fixed :p

It happens sometimes. Sometimes it will happen randomly for a day and then it is fine for a month. I think it has to do with lag. It is a good idea to use hotkeys for drone attack and recall. I use alt-a and alt-r once you do this, things like this are not really issues. ------- "Because the Dominix is the Chuck Norris of Eve!" |

Sometimes happens to me.
One thing to be mindful of is if you're trying to manage aggro (or pick off smaller targets first to reduce incoming DPS as quickly as possible) to make sure they're set to passive. Otherwise, they will retagret whatever they want even after you've put them on something specific. Irritating. You telling them to engage target should override their own aggressive targeting choices until the current target is no longer valid (ie, dead).
Next, sometimes I find that the drones will be set to attack something, and they will for a couple shots, then stop and sit idle. Huh?
Third, you sometimes still have the issue of drones bumping and getting stuck on in each whilest lining up to return to the drone bay. This especially (or only?) happens with mining drones, because they take a second to unload their ore before docking up, so they get stuck and sit there sometimes. Sometimes you have to tell them to return two or three times, because if they got hung up on a prior drone dumping his ore, they give up trying to return. So it seems.
Finally, big irritant, sometimes it seems as though the drones don't check to see whether they're set to aggro/passive and/or focus/split fire except for when they leave the drone bay. In other words, sometimes it seems as though, when you change a setting but the drones are already out in space, they don't acknowledge the change. If you return them and then launch them again, then they make the switch.
Dunno. It's a whole lot of "sometimes it seems as though," I'm afraid, but that's my two cents'.
Maybe some day they'll allow mining drones to respond to 'all drones: engage target' and start mining repeatedly (or a new command for it specifically). Maybe also there will be some way for drones pilots to have any success against sleepers, sigh. Pick a new DPS, punk.

CCP really needs to put some time into drones. The drone AI customization options are simply abysmal. Players should have many options to customize the way drones interact with their environment over and above "passive" and "aggressive". For example, there should be settings to prioritize targets: "attack frigates first;" "cruisers first;" etc.. Also range prioritization: "attack nearest first;" "attack farthest first." There should be a hyper-aggressive setting which allows them to fire upon hostile targets on their own before the target has attacked. There are many ways the devs could make drones more programmable. Make it happen. This is something that should have been done when the game came out.

Thus the reason I leave my drones at home.
Last time I used them - they started attacking an asteroid colony in my mission ...

Thanks all for the responses. This does seem to be most applicable to conditions I observed.

Same issue here. I cannot tell you how many times I tell drones to engage one target, then half of them end up going to another random target a few seconds later and I have to tell them, again, what to do.

make the drones passive and hotkey engage and recall. i've noticed that there's a delay after launching drones or after a target explodes, where they won't respond. you have to wait 5 seconds or so for all of them to get the command. that's pretty much solved all my problems. |
