I've heard some things about CCP remaking all the skins on ships over time in the near future. Something I've always noticed is the uncustomizable aspect of owning a ship. Aside from naming your ship, there's very little you can do as far as making the ship look like your own (save the T3's). I believe there may be an opening to allow for personal skins on ships. I understand this has been said before, and it has been discussed how fully customzable skins would lag the server beyond holy hell and isn't worth our time. A common middleground would be taking the current system (which boasts several skins per hull, but restricts to each class), and allowing more freedom of choice.
- Skins would be added to the market and dozens would be made for every ship. - These skins would fit an added MOD slot (much like another rig slot) - These repaints would allow people to submit various artworks that could revamp every ship making simple ships much more sought after and fueling the market to get these various paint-jobs. - The skin's once added to the ship would be stuck permanenlty much like rigs. You can always add another skin on top of your current skin, but you can never remove, or go back oncea new skin is added. (much like painting over an old paint job) - Repackaging would simply put the ship back to "stock" colors with an open skin slot
Final words: Again this would not only fuel the market into buying simple ships, but would give players a better love for their ships. They would also add a level of collectability for certain "rare" skins, and new skins could be added for special players or alliances.
Considering being allowed to create an alliance skin after having an alliance survive for a given amount of time. You could have a 200 man fleet in space all boasting your flag colors thus solidifying you as a group.

This sounds like a pretty sweet idea to me. It would allow players to get their own artwork in the game aside from alliance logos (assuming player submissions were allowed, and assuming they were chosen by the devs for their pure awesomeness :P) If this idea isn't very viable however, I would like to propose atleast being able to have a small customizeable logo or patch that could be painted on a player's ship in (a) certain determined location(s) on the modles of ships. Maybe these would be available to be bought on market like the skins, or perhaps just available to add to your ship via right-clicking it in station and paying a small fee or something. Either way... that's my two cents for now :)

I believe I can agree on the predesignated skin themes. Personally I would like to paint half my ships the same color as a damnation or have a vicious blood red/black of the Widow paint job as corporation paint scheme. Sure other people could have that color, and I don't it should be rare, after all it's only paint. Player submissions would in my mind be required to have been submitted in a specific format (sort of like color by numbers, so tiles and graphic display properly) and the "wear and tare" graphics are on a separate layer and ABOVE the custom graphics, so the scheme doesn't look too cartoony.
So I'd vote for this but make it more of a common feature then a rarity hunt. In a galaxy full of AI Drones, Colossal ships of mankind, and the technology of the Jovians clone technology, I think getting paint of ANY color or variety is achievable. But to help with the server load, most paint schemes are pre-designed and the custom ones would be the same deal as alliance icons. An alliance could purchase the scheme for an isk sink or such.

Considering what can often be the pirates most fearful element is that blazing claw emblem on the side or skull and crossbones. You have time to look at it and your jaw drop as you realize who you are next too....
It's also why I am a LARGE supporter of a "CORPSE" skin. I have wanted to have a ship decorated like I was a Reever ever since I watched Firefly. I can think of nothing better then to have the privilege of staring at a string of corpses across my hull put there (in story) by my own doing.

Wow, this didn't even cross my mind. I intially just figured alliance would be allowed to "manufacture" skins over time, and only certain levels within the alliance could create the skins. Therefore the skin would be unique to the alliance, and members, but the ships may slip out, and you'd be able to buy big alliance ships without actually being in the alliance. No bonus to the ship, and yet it still means you get to fly a "special ship". Can you imagine flying in a hurricane painted with yellow and black stripes? lol The idea of actually buying the rights is actually a very clever solution on how to distribute the custom skins. For 10billion you get x amount of skins to give out (you have to be the alliance CEO or such). You can hand these out to your members pending how you'd like.

If this could be done without increasing server lag, I would be all over it!

+1
Server lag: Preload the skin, it'll be 4 bytes extra when you warp into a grid per ship (e.g. skin ID) I don't think it should be a problem. ---
