We've seen a fair bit of crying and complaining here in GD over the past week or so, let's all just take a moment and think of the poor botters. According to this article on Nosy Gamer, they have new problems.

I really like that though. Kinda gives a sense of security, but .... is it possible that could hurt other players? As in, I recently moved, and the IP addy attached to my new modem is banned from multiple websites that I used to frequent... which really sucks because I can't access lots of places due to some jolly person ******* up before I moved in. Could something like this happen with eve? I don't know computers so it may be completely irrelevant...hence why I ask. |

IP banning is such a poor tool to use, I'm not sure that's what CCP would actually go for.

Do we have to worry about CCP Sreegs, sending us eve mail, making fun of our pitiful rigs now? I will not be voting in the CSM election, so you need to go vote to make up for me. |

I'd hope it's at least linked with the other fingerprinting stuff they use. I often use a VPN due to privacy concerns (Some of the recent UK court rulings are terrifying IMO). I've never connected to Eve through it purely due to the added latency and their being no point. It's only a matter of time before I forget to disconnect it though and launch the client.
I couldn't see CCP purely banning people based on a shared IP, certainly when there is zero other bot activity on the account. I hope not anyway. |

IP banning is next to useless, a lot of people still have dynamic IP addresses that they have no control over.
Hardware fingerprinting is one way of doing it, some of the persistent botters use VMs to run multiple clients and VMs by their very nature have a very limited hardware sig because they only emulate certain hardware brands (pretty sure VMware emulates basic intel stuff).
The only legit use I can think of for playing Eve with a VM is if you're running a machine that doesn't natively support Eve (ie one without SM3 or an unsupported OS), I myself have logged in using a VM on my netbook to change skills when I'm away from my main machine, but it's pretty useless for anything else. War hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside. |
