Hello Ships and Modules discussion!
I am a new player (just hit 11 days old!) and have been planning out my skills with evemon. I have kind of planned out what support skills and such I will have to train to fly any ship (Capacitor, shield/armor tanking, navigation, ect.) and have come to a predicament.
This question I have probably clogs up these very forums day-in and day-out:
"What race should I fly?"
Now, I being a weak-willed person, I don't really have any specific goal in mind, and I was looking at ships up to, and including, the battle cruiser class. I currently don't have a corporation, but I hope to one day live in 0.0 with all the cool kids.
Now back to the topic at hand; Amarr have the whole rule of cool covered, with their "lazers and gold! pew pew" factor, while the squidies have their whole "because of falcon" ECM. Seeing as I have next to no playing experience, looking at the various T2 frigates and Battle cruisers did not help me in the least.
Any veterans/piwats/whoever mind letting me pick their brain?

I don't really know what you want to do in EVE and I'm not sure if even you know what you want to do, so I'm just saying this: flying a Falcon is for alts.

You haven't said what you actually want to do. If you want to pvp as fast as possible you could pick minmatar and go the classic rifter -> rupture -> Hurricane route. If you want to pve then caldari is the obvious choice and go kestrel -> caracal -> Drake. If you want to both i personally would go caldari for pve and train ewar skills for griffin / blackbird for cheap pvp ship.

Well, I would like to get into the pvp aspect of the game, with maybe a little ratting/missioning on the side to fund my ship loses, if that helps any.

That, and the bad karma aspect.
There is a special place in hell reserved for falcon pilots.

Edited by: Wild Zubat on 30/11/2010 23:39:01 Well, I have done a little more poking around, and find the covert ops./stealth bomber line to be intriguing. Is there any particular disadvantaged race in this regard?
I would like to be a valuable member in a gang/small roam setting, preferably as support; is there any particular class of ship that would be best suited for this role with minimal play experience?

Amarr or Minmatar
i would pick Amarr since you like lazors and they are very good in pvp.
If you don't find something to really work towardds, you may find eve a very boring place - it does not offer much content the way other mmos do. -----------

All the tier II battlecruisers are pretty good ships so it's hard to choose between them just based on that - a lot comes down to your style of flying and personal preference. I think Drake an Myrmidon do quite well in the tanking department so can be quite static if you basically just want to sit still and blast stuff. Hurricane can be a good choice if speed is what you need. Also a gank fit harbinger is a beautiful sight with those lasers, and good fun to fly to boot.
In terms of cruisers I've never been that taken with the Caldari's range where as between the other races you have cruisers such as Arbitrator, Vexor, Thorax, Stabber, Rupture all of which can be great fun to fly and effective ships for a variety of tasks.
If you just wanted FOTM though Minmatar still seem to be the most popular choice at the moment and they do have a great line of ships. But that doesn't mean the otehr races don't have their gems.
Eventually you'll probably end up cross training anyway for the fun of it, a good short term goal would be to pick a race and get up to battleship level to run level 4 missions in so you have a good source of income to fall back on should you need it.
Ultimately pick the one you like, with aplay style you like, and stick with it to BS then diversify. Like having drones to do the killing while you chill? Maybe consider Gallente. Don't like having to keep buying ammo or waiting to reload? Pick Amarr. Want to go fast? Minmatar is for you! Wanna fly a falcon? Caldari winner, chicken dinner!

Cool! Thank you very much for the run down of the different races. This is more or less exactly what I needed. Looks like the Amarr mandate has another disciple.

Get friendly corp asap. A laid-back corp that does mission running or worm-holing or something.
Something small with peeps in your timezone.
It'll give you the fastest feedback on the ins and outs of the game. Plus real time information on the strength weaknesses of the various races.
But as a general rule: - Minmatar excel for smaller ships - BS and caps often are underwhelming - good for solo PvE because of their speed - Amarr trend toward the opposite - BS heavily represented in large fleet engagements - Caldari shield tankers consistently excel in PVE. Generally the only ships that can solo Level 5 missions - Gallente tend to be really well balanced. Nice ships in all classes
Key is, as said, pick your style and the things you want to do. But whatever you choose you'll probably find a reason to cross train if you're in the game long enough.

11 days old saying "because of falcon" makes me think you are a troll or something but this thread has absolutely no snark in it so I'm at a loss...
I'd train Amarr > Caldari, but I'd train Minmatar > All.

11 day old character probably doesn't know what because of falcon means.. or about the general perception of falcon pilots

When I first started playing I was told that Minmatar was basically playing Eve on hard mode. Since their race isn't exactly static when it comes to tanking types, etc. But don't take my word for it, I am still a bit of a noob and I have experience with mostly Gallente.

Edited by: Tiger Prince on 01/12/2010 02:37:11 Just a little insight on the different races:
Amarr: Use lasers (limited to EM/Therm dmg, no ammo to carry unless T2 or Faction), Buffer Armor tankers +T2 resist plugs Explosive armor hole.
Caldari: Missile boats (selectable DMG type but some bonused for kinetic), Passive shield tankers
Galante: Drone boats and some hybrid platforms (hybrid weapons are in need of a fix atm), Active Armor Tankers
Minmatar: Use Projectiles (no cap to fire, selectable damage type but heavy in exp and kin), Active Shield Tankers +T2 resist plug EM shield hole
Each race has their own uses so fly what you want. Also don't forget about the pirate factions because they have some nice ships too. My personal preference is Minmatar (aside from most of the ships looking like an explosion in a girder factory) as they fit the way I like to play.

So your saying you want PvP? It depends on what in PvP your looking for:
Volleying: Sitting in a Macheriel at the ass-end of Jita 4-4 dropping arty loads twice a minute. Close Up and Personal: In a Fast-Lock Thrasher with a bunch of Autocannons ready to scram and tear apart. Support: Not all in there, but quick enough to volley off your High-DPS Pulse Laser/Blaster once to get a shiny spot on the killmail.
Theres way more to it, but those embody the main things. If you want to get on every killmail, tackling is your suite. If you just want to "finish him", get a volley ship.
Rai-I mean FAILguns will not volley good. Get your self 1200mm T2 Artillery Cannons and sit back in a Maelstrom or Machariel. Unless, of course, Tachyon Lasering with a Nightmare is your thing

Intricate how someone can mention Jita 4-4 because someone else mentioned it and then add an insult to it, not impressed with minimod.

The Drake is probably one of the easiest ships in game to skill for and run decently high level missions to get cash.
Minmatar for all the reported pwnage take a load of skills to actually get that good. I'm still not seeing it.
