In an effort to make eve enjoyble to more people I suggest adding voice commands to the game. I think this would allow people with handicaps or other problems a hands free way to enjoy this awesome game.
(Real reason): I wanna re-enact my favorite space movies while yelling commands at my comptuer and motioning my hands for no reason but to look awesome.
AND: because im not nearly annoying enough on TeamSpeak.

Edited by: Foofad on 01/12/2010 05:45:43 Even though voice commands in games haven't been all that great to date, in theory it's an awesome idea.
The problem is making it work well enough that it can be used quickly in a firefight. Then you run into problems like impossible to pronounce pilot names for targetting purposes, accidentally sending your combat drones at a friendly logistics target when you sneeze, and so on.
I can think of a few ways to counter each of these problems though.
It's doable, but I doubt they'll ever do it.
Tom Clancy's Endwar is the last game to try to do this, and it was more-or-less successful, if clunky. It did work... sort of. There were moments of sheer bliss. When it didn't work it was frustrating as hell though.
Edit: For the ultimate nerdgasm... have Aura talk back to you.

Now that I think about it, it would be really easy, even with current somewhat lamentable voice recognition tech. Basically all you would need is an additional overview column which contained a three digit alphanumeric identifier code for each object. Like D10 (Delta-One-Zero), AOZ (Alpha, Oscar, Zulu), etc etc. Then there's no ambiguity when assigning orders. To double-check the order for accuracy, the overview would highlight the person you're trying to designate, and then prime for a confirmation order, perhaps with different levels of confirmation for risky/safe actions. So a simple order might be, "Lock Delta-One-Zero, confirm." The confirmation order in this case being "confirm," after the overview highlights the correct person, because locking is a fairly safe action. Then "Gun group Delta-One-Zero, execute." Gun group (alternatively, just "guns") specifies guns instead of missiles, execute being the "dangerous action" confirmation word.
There should be enough permutations of ID codes to scale pretty much indefinitely, and the EVE vocabulary is diverse enough to have command words that are discrete enough to not cause confusion.
So yeah, it's definitely doable from the user interface side of things.

Edited by: Triple Entendre on 01/12/2010 06:18:41 I'd train carriers just to be able to shout "SPIN UP THE FTL DRIVE!" and "LAUNCH ALERT VIPERS!"

"Make it so, Number One" should turn on the autopilot.
Then you kick back in your pod, watch your crew handle all the dirty work, and wish you had more hair.

Edited by: Soul Nommer on 01/12/2010 06:26:13 Aside from the obvious sillyness of my initial post I was thinking about looking for a 3rd pary voice recognition software that I could confire to activate key macros by voice command. EG: Fire Turret "number" (F1-8) Activate Shield booster/armor repair(Shift/ctrl + F"w/e slot its in)
Im unsure of shortcut keys for overheating but basically any command that can be assigned a shortcut key should be easily converted into voice recognition.
Of course the above examples are purely straight forward. were I to do this I would have No choice but to ham it up as much as humanly possible. for example: "Prepare to make the jump to lightspeed (slign to) Shop da whoooop (fire DD) FIRE EVERYTHING!!! (overheat and activate all modules) red alert! (Activate defensive modules) Engage. (warp to)
Endless annoyance of teamspeak to ensue.
