Hello fellow players,
I am not a very experienced Eve player, but I do know most of the basics.
Yesterday I was a victim of a station camp. I lost nothing serious, but it did raise two questions on the subject. I am aware that you can bootmark a position +100 km straight ahead of the exit of a station and use that spot to instantly warp to when undocking.
However, after undocked yesterday, I immediately noticed 3 red blinking ships in my overview and quickly decided to use my safe insta-warp BM. But within 1-2 seconds after my ship became active for control, they already targetted me and reduced my ship to a pile of scrap metal before I was able to navigate the menu and order a warp to said BM.
First question: How can do this faster? Can I assign a hotkey that I can spam in situations like this (even though I doubt it helps at all) to initiate the insta-warp-to-safespot?
Second question: What was the design intention of the designers to give the campers all the advantages over the players who undock? With no local chat indicating the hazzard, the undockers have no way to know what to expect or protect themselfs.
Looking forward for to all your honest answers
Kind regards,

The bookmark needs to be more than 150km away in order for you to warp to it. If you have an insta BM you should escape 90% of the time (outside of 0.0).
Another tactic to be aware of is that you are totally safe until you activate any modules or change velocity...with one exception. You can stop the ship by pressing Crtl-Space. Then if you wait the timer out, you can normally redock before being killed.

Ooh, I was under the impression they removed this, is it still 30 seconds? Where can I view this timer?
So basically, the next time I see these blinking red lights I should just relax and float pass-by (and of course wave meanwhile to be polite) and take my time to order the insta-warp?
Thanks for your reply btw :) There are 10 types of people; those who understand and those who don't understand binary! |

If you're going to dock at a station more than once then make an insta-undock. Don't be lazy either - make one well off-grid (1000km or more).
If you haven't got one then you have serveral options :
1) If its in Empire (high or low-sec) undock in a pod as pods instawarp; 2) If you know the station isn't a kickout (ie you undock at high speed and go outside docking range) then undock and hit CTRL-SPACE immediately. If there's fast locking ships waiting then dock just after the session timer expires; 3) If you have a friend then they can punt you out - they make an insta-undock, fleet you and as soon as you undock they fleet warp you to the insta-undock. This happens while you're still looking at a black screen on undock.
There are other ways too but these ones are simple and will work where there isn't a bubble.

Welcome to eve.
What you just experienced is what we call station games.
The following is the MOST important information you can have for highsec wars and will save your life.
1. You did have intel on the situation and didn't realize it. Before you undock your ship ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS check local. If you see ANY red stars next to names, those are wartargets. You see multiple you are iether A. Behind enemy lines or B. In a system being camped.
2. Timers. LEARN THE TIMERS. People live and die by the timers. Here are the timers:
You engage ANY offensive module, you may not dock for 60 seconds from last use. THIS INCLUDES DRONES BEING OUT.
You undock you are invulnerable until: 1. You activate a module, 2. You Change direction(like to warp), 3. 30 seconds expires. After any of these you are fair game.
You may not redock until 30 seconds after undocking.
Any fleet movement resets a 30 second timer so no docking.
3. Mechanics Each station has properties that are unique to it and VERY important. They are: Docking Radius - How close you have to be to the station to be in dock range. "Spit out"(undock) radius - how much variation there is to undock direction. "Suicide stations" are stations that have a very small dock radius, they spit you out out of docking range. You will see why this is bad in the example section. You are spit out at 1.5x max speed. "Insta-warps" are bookmarks made over 150km away from the undock (Do 170km+ to be safe) The reason your "intsta-warp" didn't work is that the undock radius was large and probaly spit you out 5 degrees to the right/left/up/down of your bookmark. In short you weren't aligned.
4. In Practice (Examples) You are flying a drake, there are 2 battle cruisers outside waiting for you.
1. Check local, see 2 WTs in local. 2. Undock said drake 3. The station you are in has a large docking radius. In undocking you see 2 hurricanes but they are not firing, because they can't, because you haven't TOUCHED ANYTHING. Now you have 30 seconds to figure out what you want to do: A. You count to 30 seconds, and redock. You are within the docking radius and are good to go. Not a scratch on you. B. You tease them, you fire a single volley off allowing them to engage you. You then STOP and tank their damage for 60 seconds and re-dock. C. You have an insta-warp and a station with a narrow undock radius. You instawarp off.
Tricks to look out for: 1. Being baited. They may camp with one guy and as soon as you engage 5 wartargets jump in from the system over. 2. Fleet tricks, if you are playing games with them and they ask you to join their fleet (for whatever reason) DON'T!. If you undock they will move you around in fleet and you will not be able to redock. This is my favorite trick though :)
I am sure there is a litte more I missed out on but its early and that should give you a good understanding.

Many thanks people, I guess my best option is just to do nothing next time and warp off. I was flying a loaded Impel with 2 Inertia Stabilizers and 3 Warp Stabilizers yesterday, perhaps I accidently changed speed or something, because I am positively sure they one-shotted me the moment I was in control.
With these tips I think I can outsmart the campers.

To be frank, the safest way of taking a look outside station in EMPIRE (not 0.0) is just to select "leave ship" and undock in a pod. If the gank squad is outside then warp off or redock.

Edited by: Seraph Castillon on 01/12/2010 17:39:02 I'm assuming that if you try to re-dock (hit the dock button, no movement other than stopping) before the 30 second timer expires, you of course won't be able to, but you will become vulnerable. Correct?
When does the timer start counting? When you hit undock? When the last loading bar completes?

You are correct. An action = vulnerable.
Dont know, never really counted it within a few seconds. I just wait and don't touch anything and as soon as I get yellow boxed I dock (unless its an alpha gang, then my friend you are in for some trouble and better be counting)

Esc menu > General Settings tab > Check "Show Session-Change Timer"
This adds a little spinny bit in the upper left corner of the screen that remains until your session change is up and tells you time remaining in a little tooltip. When that clears, you can begin redock attempts because you're about to get shot at :p

Protip: Don't log out in stations if you live in 0.0. Log at a safe spot, or in a friendly POS.
Protip 2: You can still view local in station.
Protip 3: Use intel channels before you undock in a system with hostiles in it. Sarcasm - Because i'm too far away to strangle you. |

Yeah, sorry its just that setting up your "Show session timer" is so basic its easy to forget.
When you are playing station/gate games in Empire then you need to be aware of all the possible timers.
In 0.0 its a lot simpler for timers and more complicated for movement.
Swings and roundabouts....

Also note that for the past several patches, you no longer undock in exactly the specified undock direction. Your path varies by 5 degrees in any direction. So if you undock the first time traveling to the left and make a 1000km insta, then undock the second time to the right and try to warp there, you may have to turn by as much as ten degrees. In a slow-ass ship like the Impel, that turning time could give them the few seconds they need to lock you.
When you make your insta, try to visually line up your path of travel with the station, and test your insta several times, making new ones if necessary.

During the 30 second invulnerable undock period, what happens if the hostiles bump you?

You can't be "bumped" until you activate a mod or your timer wears off.
Of course most noobs freak out and try to burn back to station, allowing epic bumpage and pwnage.

Would this tactic work:
You're in a BS fitted for snipping. Insta-undock to 170KM. Once there, you snipe them. Whether you win or loss depends on who is camping you but would the above practice work? I think BSs take about 20 seconds or so to warp off so I guess if they scram you, you're dead. -----------------

Well if they scrammed you, you just re-dock.
Thing is, while you're shooting at them from 170k away, they can just dock to get away from you
