Edited by: Mighty Beard on 03/12/2010 09:11:54 So I am sitting on a large sum of ISK. I am interested in investing it. Any tips on ways to spot a reputable IPO/Bond? Who are the more reputable corps/players to trust? Any info would be appreciated! Is MD just a sespool of scammers and liars trying to make a quick buck?

Asking that in MD is like going to a Casino manager and saying "I have $100,000 cash, what should I do?"

At the risk of being proved wrong, there are a handful of solid entrepeneurs.
BMBE (TornSoul) is beyond any criticism but offers only 3 % I believe.
Among bonds I would recommend any bonds coming from RAW, Rykker Bow, Lord Arbalest, or Proton Power.
I have run many bonds myself but have no plans for new ones, so I am quite unbiased in the matter. I currently offer just 2% to anyone who wants to deposit their isk at my disposal. ----------------------- "Signatures" chatroom / LLSE Stock Market |

If the mean time between getting ripped of is anything less than 2 years, that kind of rate doesn't pay off...
MD bond/IPO market is for RP wannabe's, not proper investment.

I did the figures a few months ago and if you just invested an equal amount into every offering that launched (NOT scaling your investment to offering size) without even bothering to discriminate amongst them on any grounds, you would still come out ahead. The key thing is to diversify. If you then factor in some basic criteria like audit requirements, avoiding more than one bond/expansion per offeror at a time and such like, you come out very comfortably ahead.
You are right that you would have to have about 24 months of successful investment at 3% for each time you get scammed at 3% but the fact of the matter is, for each scam there are far more than 24 months of payouts collectively from other bonds/IPOs in the 3% region in a year (going on the data from the last 24 months).
If you are a discriminating investor as well as diversifying you can do very well. flakeys, for instance, has made tens of billions from his investments in the last year and has been scammed once.

If is not listed in the Stock Exchange, then don't invest.

I have a feeling there's going to be a new IPO post in.... let's say, 20 minutes... from a guy with absolutely no connection to me. It's gold, give him all your ISK, He'll pay it back for sure!!
*time to go make a new al-err, play WoW. Or something else equally non-alt-creating*
*fakeedit* Ahh, who am I kidding, I'm way too lazy to do that **
Seriously though- don't wait (or look for) someone to come to you. Anybody who comes to you will be trying to scam you; somebody who's legit will just post a thread with an offer/request. Find one of those which (and here's the hard part) doesn't smell AT ALL fishy to you, and invest it there. 3% which gets paid back is 100% better than 15% that doesn't ;) *** Wish list for PI:
*One-click input routing *Copy product, inputs & outputs in factories *Launchpad upgrades: twice the space, twice the cost, half the hassle! |

Do some reading of past, semi-past and prestent threads here. Then take your ISK and send it to somer and blink it. That way you'll have a chance of seeing it again.

Hah! I was just thinking I should message Mighty Beard asking for investment in my T1 Ship manufacturing business
Ah well. Some good tips might be 1) If they are unwilling to consider an audit be wary, it's not 100% but is a good filter 2) Stay away from low and null sec 3) They should be able to provide some idea of profitability. 4) People always say be wary of toon traders. (people always say this, not 100% convinced) 5) New alts asking for large sums.
I think the advice from Jamie Jin is good too.

My biggest key to investing (disclaimer: my investment history is tangled in a web of alts) has always been trusting my own instinct and not relying on the opinions of forum regulars. I've invested in bonds that the community railed against and felt secure all the way to the bank a year later. I've managed to invest around 80b total (though not all at once) for some pretty lengthy periods and have yet to lose a single isk.
Look at a bond or IPO and figure out for yourself if everything adds up. Do the numbers sound right for the business model? Does the offer sound like it was written by a 12 year old with a thesaurus and spell check (Grammar and spelling OK but understanding askew)? Develop your own criteria and be as rigorous as the risk requires and investing is a breeze.
