Edited by: Pou Tau on 07/12/2010 19:31:58 I have only been playing eve a few months but I have already seen intolerable behavior against new players. Time and time again someone; scams a newbie out of a P.L.E.X., or convinces them to join their corp and move their Tech 1 fitted raven and 17 million in assists to 0.0 solely to steal them. For the sake of new blood, and continued survival of the game please consider anyone who is...
<2 months old (Trail + First Month) and has <75 million in assists
Off limits to scams / griefing / ganking.
Now if they provoke you in any way, teach them what ever lesson you want. But otherwise lets be helpful to the new blood, because it was veteran players help which kept me playing.

I'm pretty sure this is a troll, but that's okay. I'm at work and I don't want to be.
Eve has always been this way, and it is intentional. It's a sandbox game with no ethical rules. Survival of the fittest, trial by fire.
It also takes two people for this to become a problem. Person one to execute the scam, and person two to forget that it's a game and get all bent out of shape over it instead of learning.
See, when I first started Eve, I told told that SmartBombs were 'smart' because they only damaged ships that had aggressed you. I thought that was pretty neat, so after some encouragement I was convinced to go to Jita and try it out.
Well, of course I exploded, but instead of running to C&P and making a terrible thread, I called the guys *******s and then laughed with them - because it's just a game and, well, it WAS pretty funny. It also taught me a good lesson about what Eve is really about.
It's all about attitude.

A several-month-old player with the skills to fly a T1-fitted Raven can recover 17 million in assets in a matter of _hours_, if not _minutes_. Even starting from basically scratch, a full recovery (i.e. replacing the raven) can be achieved by running up the missions in about a week without dedicating more than casual play-time to the game.
So... basically, they should get over it. You win some, you lose some.
I say this with all love, as someone that usually won't even pod people unless they're being douchebags. HTFU, there aren't really any permanent penalties in this game. ---

Too many carebears and safety in EVE to understand this, nowadays. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

It might.
Imagine this scenario.
You come across some new player in lowsec in his shiny new faction cruiser and you decide not to gank him - "It can't hurt to let him be".
Then someone else comes alone, pops him, and scoops the loot and kill mail. While you're raging about leaving the new players alone, you accidentally fall out of your chair and break your arm, then pull your monitor down on your head trying to stand back up giving yourself a concussion. All of that could be avoided had you just shot the new guy in the first place.
I'd say being nicer to new players could be pretty painful indeed. --Vel

I mean if they are flying around 0.3, by all means, show them what it means to be a pirate~
But thats a bit different than going to the SoE epic arc for "recruiting," then offering to transport assets to the HQ in null sec.....

1. You are new, and obviously one of the dumb ones. I knew within 1 hour of beginning to play that Eve was not safe in any way shape or form. This is what attracted me to the game.
2. This has been going on since Eve began, and the game has survived quite well. Inferring that the game will die because noobs get scammed is also pretty dumb.
3. They provoke me by having assets. I respond by relieving them of said assets and in turn doing two things, either ridding eve of players who are too dumb to really be an asset to anyone anyway, or by making better and smarter eve players.
I provide a service dammit.

But how would they know its not their game? A couple of months is hardly enough time to get your feet wet in this game, really, its a continued learning process for awhile, until you get comfy doing something. Don't get me wrong, it's a pretty big sandbox game, but I can see where the OP is coming from.

Those that do not learn fast, die fast. The steep learning curve of eve, the everpresent threat of pirates and griefers looming around the corner and the fact you loose all assets you had on you is what keeps both idiots and children away from the game.
As a newbie Gallente back on my first character, I had just bought a shiny new ship and decided to fly back through a couple of low security systems as a shortcut back to my missions. Ofcourse, there had to be a gate camp waiting for me and pop went the weasle. Although I was unhappy, that day I learnt that in Eve, sh** happens, and that i'de most likely end up doing the exact same thing later on to some other random noob.
