Edited by: Wrayeth on 14/12/2010 16:30:53 Okay, so I was reading through the "Server on Fire" thread and saw several hamster references. That reminded me of a question I've long wondered: when/what was the first time the EVE servers were referred to as hamsters? I know I made a reference to them back in 2004 or so ("the wheel's still spinning but the hamster's dead" in regards to the death of a node), but I've been wondering if anyone had called them such before that.
Can anyone with l33t forum/database search skills (*cough* Chribba *cough) find the first time the servers were referred to as hamsters? I'd most definitely be interested to know when it actually was.
EDIT: Spelling fail. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!" |

Servers have been known as 'hamsters' before EVE Online. ---

Some say that IBM invented HamstersÖ way back in the mid 80's to power pc's after many failed attempts to boot up DOS with other little-known power sources such as spaniels (wouldn't go in a straight line), tortoise (no good at running), leopards (too big for a desktop machine) and goldfish (kept forgetting to run).
After many minutes of animal cruelty hamsters were found to be ideally suited to powering pc's & servers due to their ambivalent desire to run to the end of the wheel connected to the generator inside your spangley new top of the range 333mhz gaming rig.
Whilst they are like their furry cousins in design, the gerbil is nowhere near as up-to-date as the new range of high end hamsters they can be used in case of emergencys if ol' hammy decides it's time for a nap whilst your in a fleet fight. :Please note that fitting a gerbil in place of a hamster, even temporarily, will invalidate your warranty.
Hamster developement and genetic modification now allows big companies such as CCP to invest in dual wheel or even (dare I reveal it) quad wheel rigs with the new breed of hamsters which can run twice as fast for half as long. (see fight notification thread - that's all that happens!)
If you're looking for exact dates for reference might i suggest going for a little lie down, or lick a window, or better still you could use eve-search like other 'l33ts' do.

Several years ago the CCP hamsters's formed thier union. Thats when everyone found out about them. CCP had been keeping them hidden because they were slaves. Now the hamsters get full CCP benefits and get new wheel every year.
