Hey guys I was sitting on gate guarding losec from low security outlaws and I had my headphones on and there where rats camping the gate too and it was pretty cool listening them the sound effects where pretty immersive then I had an awesome idea How about a special cov ops hunting cov ops ship -or- just a module, with a submarine style sonar system where you actually use headphones and sound to locate cloakies. It could work dscan style pinging ina general direction and listening for the return echo denoting general direction and distance, all auditory.
We would also need some kinda counter, ie. a rig maybe for giving auditory cues that sonar was being used but maybe only working very close giving the hunter a chance to home in and try to wing it the last bit(if cloaked himself)
Along those lines it would be cool to have a mod for it that would work on anything dedicated to cov ops hunting but also a specific cov ops capable cov-ops hunter which could fit some kinda smart bomb or something that could damage/decloak a regular cov ops vessel without uncloaking the hunter
It would add awesome depthness stuff to the game and answer the OMG NERF AFK CLOAKERS crowd with a viable game-experience enhancing and realistic option. Smartbombing and orbiting gates and random crap like that aren't specific cov ops counters they are just players using mechanics to do something the game doesn't address realistically

Love it. I would agree to this but only if you were required to do it the old fashioned way ala safespotbuster5000.

Edited by: Nomistrav on 15/12/2010 06:44:24 A better option (being as there is no sound in space) would be something that would pick up electronic signals, hell an Electronic Attack Ship/Recon would be perfect for this as it would actually give the EWAR frigs something to do besides being a opportune target.
Perhaps something that picks up white noise from the cloaking device itself, rather. Has my support.
Edit: Also not requiring headphones, some of us with surround sound enjoy the money we spent on it.

Dunno what the old-fashioned ss busting way is but to elaborate more on my vision I would want it to take real skills to be good at it, and a good hunter to be a serious asset to an alliance etc. My dad irl God rest him ran sonar ona destroyer and he had an ear for sound not many ppl could do it.

Old fashion way was to direction scan, drain your cap, warp, direction scan, drain your cap, warp.
Your way, ping, drain your cap, warp...
Of course if you had a specialized ship.
Ping. Set direction of travel. Set distance to warp. Activate warp. Ping. . . Would be cool. I do realise there are a few issues this, like being able to make deep safes but since they will never do it anyway I doesn't matter ;)
Such a ship would also be awesome for unprobable ships :)

You know I've been pretty much against many of the anti-cloak suggestions, but this one actually has some promise. It turns it into a game of cat and mouse and makes those who are looking to find cloaking AFK guys work for it as well as train something that is almost purely PvP oriented.
Most other suggestions are basically suggestions that can be summarized as: make this change I want and we can just remove cloaks from the game for the most part.

Cloaking is a counter.
I can't support counters for counters. Remove cloaks or deal with it. If a cloak counter was ever implemented people would be whining non-stop for a counter to the counter to the counter.
No.

If you were ever to make it so the server sent information to the clients where a cloaked ship was, it would be hacked within hours so that cloaked ships would be visible to the hacked client.

No.
Wouldn't the client already know where the cloaked ship is as exhibited when you come within 2000 meters of it?

No.
Your client doesn't get any info from the server about where the ship is, until it is uncloaked. Server uncloaks it when you get within 2km of it and shows it to your client. The client in eve is just a dumb terminal, nothing more.
This is the reason I can't support this change. Those damn PL cheaters would put hacks in their sphere uberscanner so you could warp to cloaked ships normally, and even have them on grid. ---

The above hacking arguments are rubbish.
Reality Client -> : Is there a cloaked ship between me and x distance Server -> : Yes
Fantasy Client -> : Is there a cloaked ship between me and x distance Server -> : Indeed there is, hes at x,y,z and heres a fancy bookmark to warp to him...
You can't hack the client to get data from the server that the server doesn't normally send to the client. To do what you are saying you would have to hack the actual server.

Wrong, if you want to be able to scan down a ship in whatever way, it has to be not cloaked, so the server has to send you the info where it is, the server DO NOT send the info x,y,z while a ship is cloaked. If you want to be able to scan it down, the server has to send the cloaked x,y,z coords, and there we go.
a little bit of code injection into the eve client and whoop whoop we can see cloaked ships,
like some guys ae already using warp to 0 when autopiloting....

I would really like the idea of beeing able to decloak the cloaky eyes, doesn't matter if my alt likes it or not :-D But of the technically side it's a no go.
Br, Joker o7
That's nonsense.
The server knows exactly where every ship is whether its cloaked or not. If you want to scan a ship down I would imagine the only time the server ever sends x,y,z, if it even does would be when it gives you a 100% warp to hit while probing.
The server would easily be able to receive a message from the client saying 'is there a ship along my viewpoint, within x au, y au wide, z au deep and then do a look up, even on cloaked ships and say yes or no.
At the moment its programmed to not send information regarding cloaked ships, that doesn't mean it can't tell you if there's one there.
In short, since based on the OP's idea, you never receive a 100% warp to, the server would never send a x,y,z. Only a yes or no, like D-Scan. --------------------------------------------- Hate Bots / RMT?
