Is there a guide or somewhere that explains this concept?
I am thinking about using my unused SP from the learning skills and dumping it into planetary mining, and I am wondering what is involved with mining a planet?

There is Moon Mining and Planetary Interaction - they are not the same thing.

I'd advise all players that are interested in doing PI to wait until jan 18th when PI game mechanics improvements are deployed.

I'd advice all players that are interested in doing PI to wait with _selling_ the aquired planet goo until jan 18th.

About the best thing about PI is the fact you can manage your planet from across the galaxy, but then again, you got jump clones.

Thanks, so I shouldn't even start placing PI structures until that system goes live, which should be in January? Because it is part of the current expansion, correct?

Any time you take your mind off what you are doing in order to do something else - you need to consider your situation and the effect your lack of attention to your primary task could potentially have.
I prefer to do my PI stuff while safe inside a base. The only thing you can't do from safe inside a base (once the Command Center is in place) - is launch your stuff up to the pick up point ... and, of course ... go pick it up ...
The other thing about mining is - how many characters you have. If you have multiple characters ... you can become very, very busy - and stay that way - for the course of the op.
The other thing I do - is to mine mission space - rather than in the belts. You can still be interrupted by visiting belt rats - but - it drastically cuts down on the number of visiting players ... which are a lot more trouble.

Well you can of course start now, but yeah, I would wait. Current release date scheduled for january 18th as 3rd and final part of Incursion deployment.

Well I could place some PI structures, because I have the skills to give me the advanced ones, but maybe I'll just wait.
I have two accounts, I'll be mining in my Hulk, and using my other account to fly an Orca.
I'm still rather new, even though the accounts are older, I generally let them train and don't actually spend much time in game
