Well an idiots guide would be more than a couple paragraphs.
Essentially, wormholes can popup in any/most known space system (except jita? I've never seen or heard of one to jita anyway). After scanning it down and going through it, you wind up in J-space, wormhole space or any of the other name variations.
These wormholes range from class 1-6. 1 Being easy, soloable in battlecruisers, to 6 requiring group efforts to complete. Some also have spatial anomalies that modify parts of your ship. Penalties to locking range, boost to shields, various things. Local is on a delayed mode of sorts, only show up if you talk... Certain ship classes are not allowed to traverse through certain wormholes, IE a battleship cannot go into a c1 wormhole, and a capital ship cant go into a wh below c4.
Pros: No local, isk to be made, no local, no titans / super carriers / politics to deal with mostly.
Cons: Lonely, scanning, relying on groups

They are areas of space of which you can find the formidably hard Sleeper Drones. They are accessible from anywhere in K-Space (Known Space, Empire ect) but require to be scanned down. They come in 6 classes (1 Being easiest, 6 being hardest). They are also the only places in EVE which you are able to find the materials required for making T3 BPCs and Ships. Hope I helped

And then just start scanning. Remember to bring some extra probes and a cloak is also useful. Also you may make you familiar with the wormhole jump timers. You can jump in and almost immediately out again (30sec timer while cloaked) but then you can't jump back for some minutes. -- please consider to visit our w-space system, cake will be served immediately. |

Here's a link to an old but still accurate article I did on wormholes: http://www.massively.com/2009/07/19/eve-evolved-untangling-the-mystery-of-the-sleepers/

Remember to bookmark your way in, check how long the WH has left and take some probes.

I've been in a C2 that opened in Jita, as well as Amarr.
Oddly in the Jita case, nobody noticed until the hole was EOL, then there were a few small skirmishes in the system at the wormhole. They didn't stray further than that from the safety of hisec.
