Edited by: Pan Crastus on 21/12/2010 11:51:59 - I've read reviews
- I've watched videos on Youtube
- I've listened to people telling me how great it is without explaining what's so great about it
The way I see it, it's basically "building crap out of blocks for people who are terminally bored", a.k.a. Lego etc. Where is the "game" in it, what's the challenge? Building big objects to show off?
Please explain the motivation for playing this game. :-/

Its just a survival game where you can build stuff. Perhasp build stuff with some frinds. And explore stuff.
If its not for you, its not.
also its still in alpha, or beta now? So the game is not even finished, kinda pointless to do a review of it until it is :P --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Survival? What's there to survive? Is the challenge not to build something that will fall on your head?

There are currently two main game-types available (with possibly more in the future):
There's a free-play type game mode where you are literally just playing with lego and seeing what you can build. No threats to your health, this is mainly what people do on multiplayer at the moment and show of their designs (e.g. a giant 8-bit Mario or a completely explorable pirate ship).
The other game mode (which is a bit buggy in multiplayer at the moment) is Survival mode, which has multiple levels of difficulty that you can toggle. In this mode your objective is to stay alive as at night you'll be dealing with the undead, in dark caves you'll have spiders and falling hurts a fair bit more. Dying though is no big deal as you'll just respawn instantly at your starting point and have to go pick up your belongings again. Note you only really get this mode if you pay for the game.
As the game is being developed more is being added, at the moment in the Alpha stage it is a bit basic but entertaining for when you have a lack of things to do. If you're optimistic you'll look at it as a game with potential to have a lot of variety, if not you'll look at it as a mini time-waster to help settle boredom.

Actually the game went beta yesterday.
In addition to building random things you can also build an awesome castle to fend off the monsters coming at you at night or you can go cave spelunking. There is also the nether world in which you'll find unique materials (and the only permament source of light in the future). You can also build things from water "slides" and rollercoasters to a fully functioning 16bit CPU. |

In other words, you haven't played it yet, which is why you don't get it :)
Go to a friend who has it and try it for yourself.

Ah cool, haven't had a chance to look at it for a week so I'll have to check for any changes.

If you don't get Lego you most likely won't get Minecraft. And as pointed above, and as is the case with anything else, someone explaining you what it's about does not substitute in any way the experience of playing the game yourself.

Obviously the only videos the op has seen are the ones made with people just messing about building stuff with survival mode turned off.
Start your minecraft journey here then.

The survival part in beta is straightforward. Chop wood, build workbench, build wooden pickaxe, mine coal, make torches, use torches to light up a shelter. All before nightfall. Job done.
Cave spelunking and exploring the scenery is quite fun. I think you have to be a full-on gamer to appreciate the graphics - I showed my wife a lavafall and a pink sunset and a cave I had carved out behind a waterfall, but she just laughed when I said it was pretty. Noob gamers tend to put too much stock in graphics, rather than gameplay and immersion.
The game really comes into its own when you start building really amazing epic stuff. There are plenty of videos showcasing the sort of things that can be done. Suck it and see!

You are not alone. Well, many people like Twitter, Facebook, Minecraft, WOW, DIGG and stuff like that. Some people saw genius in the first 1 million pixel page.
I respect that some people can make money with these, lots of it in fact, and they should probably continue making money off them (since that's the logical thing to do: skin everyone) but I'll never understand why people actually like these things.
Edit: the only real benefit I can think of (for social sites) is that intelligence agencies can use them to their own advantage. That's about it.

Thanks for all the input.
After reading this and watching more vids I have to admit that it has some appeal to be able to modify/build anything in the game world (a quality most games lack, sadly - especially polished RPGs like Fallout where you cannot even blow up doors) as does the general concept of keeping stuff (graphically, conceptually) simple but being able to do lots of things with it (most current games do the opposite).
The discovery aspect (tools, buildings that function in a particular way like traps) is neat, but I probably lack the obsessive-compulsive behaviour genes that make people invest countless hours in something that exists mainly to look at and not to perform some useful task.
I'll stick to working then. ;-)

You'd think so, but I only resubbed a month or so ago and have been dwelling on the forums, spinning ships and chatting mostly. Can't get myself to do tedious, time consuming things like looking for a corp (with my main), moving/jumping ships around, sitting in POSes for hours etc.
Also, the main reason for keeping in touch with EVE for the past couple of years were old ingame friends and the EVE community, not any stuff I owned ingame. ;-)

I'd still give it a try, play it before you dismiss it. As has been said before, it's one of those things that you can't be told about, you have to experience them.

So you are basically paying your sub for forum access.
It's ok as so am I as my other accounts sit inactive waiting for ccp to get all this incarna stuff out the door so they can get back to fixing the game I love.

Edited by: Florio on 22/12/2010 17:45:07 Come to think about it, I think Minecraft is popular because you can make things, altering the game around you.
This is possibly why EVE has longevity and promise, because the player can influence the world and make stuff. How many other games let you do this to such a degree?
I'd love to see EVE move more in this direction. You could have modular station quarters, even modular player stations, as well as planetary structures. Allow the players to build and be creative and leave a publicly available alteration to the galaxy.
If this happened there would possibly be a host of players just spending much of their time exploring the player-created content at the different stations and planets.

Well it's nostalgic reasons mostly and because EVE rewards you for not playing. Also, it doesn't cost much and I like CCP because they're a comparatively small and focused company, highly successful in a way and they're obviously doing something right.

EVE, like most other games, is limiting in an immersion-breaking way in this regard. For example, you cannot even destroy an asteroid, space debris, stargates even with a DD. It would be so much better if you could - and then watch CONCORD come and retaliate in the case of a destroyed stargate and perhaps NPC freighters unload new parts and various ships assembling the new stargate (net effect: players can disable stargates for ~10 mins, then perhaps CONCORD hangs around for 1 hour and doesn't allow it, even in 0.0 ...).

Such things have been proposed many times from what I remember, it would certainly make players stick around even longer if they could build whole cities etc. ... But it would require solar systems to scale much better, CPU- and memory-wise.
