Whew. In the last thirty day or so, I have received at least three official looking reminders indicating that I have only 19 days left to renew my subscription. 19!
In the last week, two attempts have have been made to "give" me characters for whatever reason. It's almost reaching fever pitch.
You just got to wonder at the effort being made, and the time being expended. Is compromising an account really THAT desirable as a life achievement for some jackass?

No, but earning money is. Its simply too "easy" to make people give out their logindetails by setting up fake sites.
What we truly need is a key generator! Just like they have in many banks today! And not to mention WoW!

Edited by: Borun Tal on 21/12/2010 18:04:03 Got an in-game mail from a loser trying the Trade scam in Amarr yesterday. "Leaving high sec, get -x- ships below market!" I mailed back, knowing it was a scam, and told him I wanted all of them at the price he was asking. Put up contract. Opened chat window.
"Uh, my contract slots are full because of my move. Come to Amarr station."
"Contract or **** off". *blink* Alone in chat window.
Why do people still do this crap? Because there's always some dumb-arse that'll make it worthwhile for these idiots to waste time on it.

Same here. Then again I don't 'twitter', don't 'blog', certainly not 'facebook'. So no one knows I 'EVE'. Basically it's just me, the basement and my mom.

Never had one of those in my entire history playing this game.
Methinks some of you need to stop throwing your email around on EVE related sites so freely.

Stop giving pronz a bad name. It's perfectly safe, if you get it from trusted sources instead of getting it from your usual source at buywowgoldnao.com, furryna'visexkittens.is or other similar sites.

Yeah the P**n is not to blame. It the malicious p**n sites. They run hacks, tools and viruses pretending to be legit free or paid sites. (lol, it's not the sites, it's site owners, who do the hacking. Good as corrupt logic)
Sun doesn't cause sun burns, it's the sun radiation that does. Nevertheless avoid exposure to direct Sun radiation. (Arguing on this point is not reasonable)

Just curious, how do fishers get your email address? Do you use the same email address for each game you play on the internets and possibly (god forbid) the same username?
I have never received these emails and even if I did receive something from CCP (apart from a petition reply) I would simply delete it without reading it.
Perhaps fishers prey only on the cheap (or poor)?

Most hacking attempts come from third party sites which have been hacked, in which you give them the same email address, username or password.
The BEST security advice I can give you, or anyone for that matter, is use a seperate email address, password and username for your games. ---

Not to mention your corp and alliance forums (or your past alliance forums, or your past past alliance forums), which is likely a big culprit. |

àstill, none of this explains why I'm getting all this WoW-phishing spam. I mean, they could at least have the common courtesy of picking the right game. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

They probably looked at your character details and figured you're a WoW ***.

If you get a phishing e-mail chances are you have given your e-mail to an ISK selling site

A lot of sites congregate the user info for different games into one database. You sign up on something like <insert generic mmo website name here> for checking out EVE content, they get hacked, or worse yet, sell your email address to the phishers, they'll just send out spam for the most popular game on the internet to all the email addresses they managed to aquire. - - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring

Edited by: Nicky''s Tomb on 22/12/2010 16:54:51 Edited by: Nicky''s Tomb on 22/12/2010 16:53:42 I've never had any bogus emails. The only email I get from CCP is 2 Eve monthly Bulitens!
I also use Linux, so trojans, keyloggers, viruses and back doors don't worry me. I can even open PayPal scams without fear.
I did have a character come to me in game and say,
"Hey man, are you an alt?", "Yes, my main in in station with me it's _____al" "Cool, I like honesty.", "Look I'm leaving the game and all my stuff you can haz." "..."
I was convinced it was a scam.
It actually wasn't!!! He was true to his word, gave me all his stuff and all his ISK. I docked in that station with 1.3Mil worth of Ore and left in a faction ship with 1 bil worth of 'stuff' and 900mil in ISK.
I was waiting on a message from CCP saying I'd recieved good gained from hacking, but it never came, so I started using his stuff.
Then again... why would an account hacker have GIVEN me all his stuff?

Very rarely do sites get hacked just to get email addys. But it is common for websites, especially amateur ones, to sell user info. Unless they have a privacy policy which specifically says they won't sell email addresses it's a pretty safe bet they're selling them to anyone who asks.
Something to keep in mind next time you're making an account at "Franks awesome EVE online site" or whatever.

I take it you don't have exim installed then (or don't subscribe to your distro's security mailing list)?

I'm also getting tons of these emails.
Lots of "You've got 19 days left to renew your subscription" and "Player X is attempting to transfer a character to your account, log in here to accept".
