Both actually, number of each kind of site seems to be a constant value, when one is despawned another is spawned somewhere else. And they are despawned when someone completes them or on third DT if nobody does. So new sites can be found at any time, but there are considerable amount of them spawned on DT.
Just to add my own observations on this one: I actually find fewer sites right after DT than I do later on in the day (local time here in Italy is GMT, Eve time, +1). As sites are run they re-spawn, and although there's nothing official about it from CCP, it's generally believed that they re-spawn within 4 systems of where they originally appeared. Or they will de-spawn and re-spawn if they have been untouched for 72 hours. So the only sites spawning at DT are the ones that no one found for 3 days.

As mention before, when one is cleared, another spawns in the same region, so as long as people are running them, they are popping up at all times of the day.

I don't think the occurence of sites is broken, just that there are a growing number of people doing exploration. Some nights, I see at least 2 other probe ships per system I go through...
However, to my toon, the loot is broken. :P
4 weeks and only a few minor Dread Guristas / implant items. How many DED 4 sites must I run before I finally get something other than tier 8 affects... seriously... My escalations terminate prematurely... those that get to the end give me junk...I can get a few sites a night...but man... sure feels like a stealth nerf... unless I'm the opposite side of the coin that balances the equation for the rest of you. :)

I noticed something recently that I didn't when I first started this post -a lot of players running the easy sites to scan down, in just about every conceivable ship. A little stunned the first time I warped to a Radar site and saw some guy in a battleship trying to hack the cans...

The DED complexes feel like a stealth nerf to me as well -getting no drop, or a useless one, use to be the exception and now it's the norm. Felt like Christmas when I use to get a Pithum C-Type Medium Shield Booster once a week from a Guristas Scout Outpost. In the last month or so I've had one decent drop ( a shield resists modual) out of 20 runs -and that's only if someone doesn't ninja me out of it.

January 5th - Serpentis Fleet Shipyard
Time to completion: 56 minutes
Loot Dropped: Vindicator BPC, Core X-Type Large Armor Repairer, 2x Shadow Serpentis Armor hardeners (forget exact ones), 23rd tier OPE.
Run with Tengu and Gila.
Bad luck /= broken exploration.

Yes yes, and how long befoer that was your last succesful haul?
I think many of us are talking high-sec exploration - at least, I am. I did refer to the chance that I was just having a really long bad streak.
That said. In my last two evening's play, I've snagged a Pithum C-Type Medium SB, a Dread Guristas Small SB and a Pithi A-Type Small SB. So a nice turn of luck at last.
I have noted that the Pithi A-Types have gone up by 100-150m in the last month. So perhaps they are getting rarer, or maybe the demand has gone up...since we cannot see a market trend due to faction items not being displayed on the market, we'll have to speculate as to the exact cause.

I think it's just random bad luck on finding the sites. And I agree, there seems to be a whole lot more players doing exploration in all kinds of ships.
Couple of days ago while scanning a system I noticed 2 Hulks warp in near me at my location by the system star. Now I know they weren't there to get a sun tan or dry out some Ore. The only reason I can think of for them to be there is the same reason I was there. To do a system scan. In fact, just the other day I went into a 'Lookout' combat site and in the 1st room was a Hulk and a Retriever mining!!!
Also it seems that a lot of players are only killing the NPC's in the combat sites and leaving the structures intact which leaves the site active. I spend the time to scan and find the sites thinking - Great, lot's of rats to kill - just to go in and find it empty of NPC's. Sure, I'll blow up the main structure, get the overseer spawn, maybe an expedition if lucky but come on, I'd like to at least get a bit more action for my time.
Anyway, I have my Force Recon Cruiser set up to do high security exploration 'On the Fly' so I can cover a lot of areas quickly. Even with all of the new explorers scanning, I can still find plenty of sites to complete. If it get's worse and if I have to, I'll just go back to some of my high security 'Islands' which I know are jam packed with sites. The only problems with that is there's usually no stations and it's a long haul back to trade hubs.
I think I forgot what the main point of this thread was.

All people are talking about is teh epic drops...
I would enjoy more combat sites with more intersting sites and challenges, like the one that had a Smart Bomb in the main building that went off as you shot it.
I wish there were more cool combat sites, maybe a smidge of enhanced AI and more ways to interact with your surroundings instead of them being just backdrop.

True. The DED4 sites, etc. that I do are very routine. If I was lazy and not an honest fair-play person, I'd look at getting a script up that could clear the sites once I'd scanned them down. I do the same thing almost every time myself anyway... With slight variations in what gets targetted / shot first in some sites.

Congrats! I ran two GSOs last night in the same system and they both dropped a Pithum C-Type Explosive Dampener (think that's the name) so things are looking up.

Right... so about a month on from my last post.
I think last weekend I got 2 Medium C-Type Boosters from 2 of the 4 DED4 sites I found. But since then, it's dipped again. So much so that the best thing I've found was a 20mil+ LG Crystal impant. The rest of the stuff has been low-end stuff. Not one of the last 5 escalations into low-sec have given anything worthwhile...even went so bad as the Kidnapped escalation last night didn't even spawn the final ship...
Since last weekend, I've done at least 6 DED4's, 2 Watches, and about 5 Vigils (I found 3 in one day!), all of which gave little loot - no boosters.
So just wanting to let people know that from week to week, your results will vary.
One thing I must say, is that it has been about 3-4 MONTHS since I last saw a BPC (Gila/Worm)... in that time I've probably found around 10 boosters.

So in short, rare items are rare.
Thanks for the update

This week I'm actually going back to mission running for a little while. I scanned down at least half of Domain on Sunday and found 2 radars and one combat plex that dropped a tech I small laser...

Feels like something has changed. I'm finding less sites than I was a few months ago, and when I do find something fun I'm generally disappointed with my loots. Perhaps I was just having a good run back then, though. That's the nature of exploration.

XXSketchxx QFT.
Victoria Davion: I agree that something has changed as well: On Sunday I scanned at least 2/3 of Domain. I found 1 Sansha Command Relay (dropped a tech one small laser) and two Radars that had next to nothing in them. Most systems were completely empty except for the occasional worm hole or magnometric.

Did it occur to you that Sunday is a ridiculously busy day (when most of the PCU records are made) and that others may simply be beating you to the site?
Also, commenting on the "lack of loot" is rather stupid when you are referencing 1 3/10 and 2 radars. Bit of a small sample size there.
As per usual, nothing has changed.

Yes, but I didn't see any scan probes on D-scan all day except for my own and was in some very quiet systems.

Yup, three sites in well over 3 dozen systems when I'm use to seeing one in five even in Lone Trek (one of the busiest regions that I scan in).
I've heard of a new technique with a long range probe that, once you "calibrate" yourself, you can do a single scan with one probe and know if there is anything in the system that you want to scan down. It's possible that if there are enough peeps using that technique then the rest of us could be out of luck until we train Astrometrics to 5...

The absence of probes is not a confirmation of a lack of sites. Domain is a huge region with lots of people probing there because they think "Caldari space is too crowded I'll go to Amarr." 3 Dozen systems is nothing when the region has >100 high sec systems. Additionally, its so huge in fact that there could be that one system with 5+ sites in it just waiting to be discovered.
Quote:

Do you know why its so easy to see sites in Lonetrek? Its small and busy. I think there are something like 70 high sec systems in Lonetrek versus Domain's ~150. The result is that sites rarely bottle up (the high sec pocket in Ossa and a few other areas being the exception, but usually only mid-week). In other words, the sites are constantly moving around, resulting in seemingly "better luck."
In any regards, you missed my meaning. I was commenting on your "lack of loot" in the 3 sites you did. My point was that you should not complain about a lack of drops if you have only run 3 sites, and chances are each one of those were different (1 3/10 and 2 different radars). You need at least 50 of each of those sites to drop absolutely nothing to have any sort of valid empirical data, and even then 50 really isn't that much when you take into account other people running these sites too and possibly getting lucky.
