Edited by: gazab on 28/12/2010 14:20:55 I need your help with beta testing the latest project of mine, an Android app for reading EVE Mail. It's designed to work on Android 1.5+ and UI wise look as much as the Gmail app as possible.
So if you have an Android phone please try it out. Any kind of feedback and/or bug reports are much appreciated! If you run into any crashes please provide as much information about it as possible. Specifically I want to know what device you are using, what you were doing when it crashed and, if possible, see a dump of the error log. And feel free to come with feature requests!
Link to the .apk file: https://github.com/downloads/gazab/EVE-Mail/EVE-Mail.apk More information (and the source code) can be found here: https://github.com/gazab/EVE-Mail
I usally update the apk whenever I do important changes and I will update this thread as much as I can. When I feel it's stable enough and all obvious feature holes are filled I will release it on the Android market.

Edited by: Jolent on 28/12/2010 19:38:09 Will test it on HTC Desire HD as soon as possible! Thanks.
Edit: works perfectly on Desire HD. Two things though: the app icon is aliased (might be a good idea to re-upload a better one) and the text in the mail is enormous, you should be able to change font size.
I'll use it for a while and let you know!

Having had a little experience with evegate tie ins can I ask how you are authenticating to the server and retrieving the mail ?
Is it via a direct API feed or HTTP proxy ?

Hejsan! Hehe, I know the feeling. I'm using http://www.foxtophone.com/ to send the API key from my computer to the clipboard of my phone. But yeah, without a computer it's a real pain. Aura has some great ways of entering the API key which I will probably borrow in the future.
You're very much welcome to try it on as many devices as you can! It *should* work on most of them except the ones with the small QVGA screens which doesn't yet work.

If you need help graphic-wise send me an EVE Mail and I'll see what I can do ;).
Believe it or not I actually tried to improve the icon today. But using Photoshop through remote desktop to a computer far away with a 7" netbook on a slow wifi is not an optimal situation :D But as graphics isn't my strongest side it's very possible I will take your offer!
Regarding the font size it's not anything I've noticed. But it is possible to change font size in web views (which I use to display the mail content) so I will add it when I get access to a decent computer again!

I'm only using the EVE API directly. No proxies or EVE Gate. Here you have the relevant source code for it: https://github.com/gazab/EVE-Mail/blob/master/src/se/gazab/eveapi/EVEApi.java
Glad to hear you guys seem to like it! It's easier to keep myself motivated that way. And special thanks to Johnathan who sent some motivation that made my wallet blink! :)

Some of us want a native app to work with. Some of us don't want to hand out our full API to a third party to store on their webserver.
This app works great, keep it up! Nexus One. ----------

That was always my concern plus I didn't want to either clutter up my email box or have a new one to manage. Plus, this is open source and I do not have to worry about the service being shutdown.
Also, I can set a different notification sound so I know if its eve or email.

Got another browser (skyfire) which had better ways of marking text for devices without joystick/rollerball and had no trouble inserting the api. Definetly do it the same the Aura app does, very nice solution! :)
Have so far tryed on samsung galaxy S 2.1 (default rom) and a custom 2.2 rom, was going to try it on 2.3 also but have more serious issues with the rom itself (such as the browser ficking up :p ).
Trying on hero and 2.1 now, will report back soon..

(Was going to edit previous post but this hero is ******ed)
Anyway it works fine on hero and 2.1 (default HTC Rom).. One thing though, when flipping between landscape and portrait the api text fields are cleared, a minor annoyance though...
@ above: Depending on what device you have, you should be able to set it to allow installing apps not from the market...

Nice app. Using it on samsung galaxy s phone. Would be nice to have a mark all as read option. For when first importing you messages. Don't know if there is an option to send through it too but that would be nice too. Also add to market so auto update will work and save time.

Seems to work, more or less, on Droid X (Android 2.2)
This is pretty cool. I'm happy to see someone writing a native app, thank you!
Feedback [issues] - Since I've installed it last night, it's crashed 3 times. First two times, it was when the API servers were down and I had my limited key in it. 3rd time it had my full API, so it's probably all unrelated. I'll say that 'I wasn't doing anything else' but ownskin runs in the background, and i had to use the browser to get the keys?
I'd be happy to send you an error log, if you can explain how I get one :)
Feedback [suggestions] - Horizontal display looks okay, but can I suggest that the whole message scroll? The 'message area' is limited with the top frame being frozen. And with long messages you have to scroll a lot.
Vertical display could be improved a bit as only half of the top message frame shows, being cutoff past the corp name typically. So there's no date or time. It takes half the (vertical) display, so same suggestion as above. Can the whole message scroll?
I'll follow up in game, in case you'd like pix of what I'm seeing.
Great job so far though, keep up the excellent work!

Great to hear that it works on a wide range of devices! About the text fields getting cleared I'll keep that in mind and see if there is an easy solution for it. But since the entire is essentially recreated each time you switch orientation a fix might get too ugly. We'll see!

As Johnathan wrote you can mark all mails as read by long pressing any of them. But you're not the first who has missed it so perhaps I need to highlight that menu more somehow.
Unfortunately you can't send mails through the API. If CCP ever add it I promise you I will implement it as soon as possible! :)

Great comments! For now I'm not doing any checks to see if the API is down or if you provide a faulty API key. I'll definitely fix that. But fun features first! :) The third crash is probably because of the service that syncs with the API. I've had some problems with it also and it's under investigation.
I'm thinking of adding a simple crash reporter so it will be really easy for testers to submit error logs. Until then just continue using it as usual and see if you notice any crash patterns.
Excellent with some feedback on the interface. I might add some different ways to display the mails. It's not as easy as it sounds to make the entire mail scroll due to how it is implemented though. But nothing is impossible! I'll add a proper landscape layout before that however. Right now both orientations use the same design.
I've had no issues with the mail header being cut off in landscape mode. If you could provide a picture of that that would be much appreciated!
Thanks for helping out everyone! I'll try to get some work done on the app when I sober up next year!

First Impressions:
Doesnt split Personal/Corp/Alliance/List mails after adding an account, it doesn't automatically show that account, infact after loading the prog, you have to select which account to view. I think this would be better suited to default to one, and let us switch if we have to.

Scratch the mail header issue off the list. I don't know why, but it's fine now. And no crashes since those first 3.
+1 to see this on the market, so updates are easy. :)
And agreed, some way to sort between mail/corp/alliance/mailing lists/etc would be valuable.

Yeah, I definitely need to add a way to view corp and alliance mails separately. And right now I have no special support for mailing lists at all. Both are on my todo list!
I'll make it set a newly added character as default if it's the first one.

Hehe good! I will it add to market once I'm positive it's stable enough and when I've implemented the most important features. I think it looking rather good on the stability front though!

Thanks for doing it, seems a good idea.
Unfortunately, it's not working for me.
Magic (32B) with latest CyanogenMod Froyo.
It starts ok. I then put my full api data (checked many times, it's ok) and push "Load characters). Then I get a "messagebox" with only title and 2 buttons, but not that account chars, so I can't select. Both buttons send me back to the same screen.
I've tried the "Purge database" option, but nothing changes.
If you want some log or something, ask for it; I don't know where to find it so I can't upload it in advance.
Thanks for your work, and... Fly safe!

Hm, that sounds exactly like what happens when you enter an incorrect API key. I notice that you posted this just around downtime. Is it possible that you tried the app when the API server was down? I'll definitely look into it either way!
---------------------
In other news I just finished a new version of the app! I tried to focus on the feedback I've got from you, the users, but added some other small things aswell. Please try it out and give me even more feedback!
Version 0.2 - Added several mailboxes for personal/corp/alliance/sent/all mail. Swipe inbox to access them. - Current account is shown with a check in the account activity. - Newly added accounts are selected automatically - Added a new launcher and notfication icon to better follow the Android design guidelines - Added a setting to change font size in mails - Added a simple landscape layout for viewing mails. - Added a bottom bar with shortcuts when reading mails (Gmail style) - Added new sync interval values (and bug fixed the old ones) - Fixed issue with displaying mails with lots of receivers - Various other bug fixes, optimizations and graphical changes
You should soon be able to find it on Android market. If you want it ASAP I also uploaded the newest version on GitHub.

I've had the same problem. It needs a easier way to copy the api key. Tried holding shift, and copying the key, but it always shows a blank page at the character screen.. It's not that hard to say if the api goes nowhere, right?? ______________________________ War... War never ends. |
