*Spoiler alert*
I read a Wikipedia article on this novel and can't remember its name. The novel was about how a portal or something allows humanity to see the past as it originally was and how this new knowledge effects society. They ultimately find out that life on earth was started by aliens colonizing planets.
Does that ring a bell with anyone? Not much but that's all I have...

Apologies for the thread hijack, but I have a similar problem and it seemed better to ask here than to open a new thread. Especially as the OP has had his question answered!
The book I'm trying to remember was one I read around 20+ years ago, and may have been a childrens scifi book.
Basically it was about a guy that was sent to investigate an apparentley uninhabited planet. He was sent in a kind of mech suit to protect him from the enviroment which I think was silicon based.
Anyhow, his suit gets damaged walking though a field of silicon plants? they apparently discharged some kind of laser as he trampled the plants from stored sunlight leaving him exposed. He goes on to meet some silicon based life which reveal to him that interspecies communication is possible as every living thing has a kind of 'plug' in the base of their brain that can be used to communicate - this entails the creature (a kind of armadillo I think) putting tentacles in his ears to 'plug in' to his brain.
The story goes on to show how these creatures can adapt technology and grow their own versions, the guy in the story gets attacked and ends up with some upgrades grown for him, and (I think) the story ends with the discussion of the creatures building a starship - I'm 90% sure the last line of the book is 'No, we are going to grow one!'
Quite a bit I know, but I'm sure somebody must have heard of this book? Anyone?

Edited by: Vogue on 31/12/2010 18:17:08 I read a scifi book, forgot name at this moment, where an organic spaceship was coming to the end of its mortal life. It threw itself into a star and before that ejected an egg. A new spaceship offspring.

@Denaris
Sorry don't know that book but if you enjoyed that you might also like Peter Hamilton's 'Night's Dawn' books, which have an Edenist culture that grows organic technology such as spaceships, or 'voidhawks'. And after reading the trilogy I strongly suspect that some of the people creating EVE's background read it too.
