Come on CCP, there is no reason why you can not scan down a GSC or any container for that matter.
If it is possible with out doing the direction scanner trick, let me know if I'm behind the times, but as I understand it you can not scan out GSC with any probe type, witch is really dumb.

I heard you the last time. |

Arrived thinking OP would rant about using cargo scanners on GSCs, left disappointed. |

I don't think the containers emit any significant amount of radiation; and they shield the contents inside just by having thick walls. For this reason, it would be very difficult to find them on any sort of long-range scanners.
I think it's fantastic that the advanced ship scanners in our ships are even capable of finding those little containers from as far as the distance between Jupiter and the Sun.

It'd be a huge nerf to black ops if they could be probed. Establishing fuel depots with anchored cans behind enemy lines is how you make deep travel possible for black ops fleets. -- Terminal Impact is recruiting PVPers for fun ops in lowsec/0.0/wormhole space. It is possible to find them using Dscan, lots of time and using a fast ship.

Can confirm. took me 2 hours to find one in our WH. (sneaky man had made a safe between two safes... ).
Basics of it:
Hang around from planet to planet until you find it on D-scan. Narrow it down to smallest angle possible on D-scan. This should hopefully give you an idea between what two warpable places the Can is anchored. Open up your Places and Bookmarks warp to the first planet, then make a normal safespot between the two planets / places you think it is anchored. Warp to said safe spot and then use D-scan to work out if it's in front or behind you. Doing so now means you have a smaller distance upon which the thing can lie within the straight line warp lane. Then merely make a new safe spot between your current one and the planet it is and repeat until you gradually get closer.
It's by no means fast, and it's much harder when they person has placed it far more sneakily. Hell - don't even know if that's the best way but it worked for me.

I was trying to scan down an "un-probe-able Tengu" and got into trouble when I had bookmarks at 600k km which I couldn't select due to them being stacked on top of each other.
It turns out the other ship was on a straight-line safespot between the furthest moon of one planet and a gate, while I had started my search on the furthest moon away from that one - leaving a path about 1.4M km wide for me to traverse.
I ended up placing bookmarks back and forth along my "baseline" until the bookmarks were closer together than the distance to my target, then creating a new baseline between the other moon and the wrong end-point.
Once I got the bookmarks closer together on that line than the distance to the target, I started putting bookmarks in between the two "baselines".
I ended up with a solar system map full of bookmarks, and no way of selecting the ones I wanted, and still not being any closer than 600k km to my target

Oh yeah also grats if you HAD gotten closer the guy would have warped off. It's totally worth the effort, right? _______________________________________________ "If you want to taste the ground, feel free to attack." - Kenshin Himura
