I liked CFS because it was free space and there were loads of miners/npcers to kill and the odd fight with the local defence force. Hellspawn and I could kill over 20 BS on a good night during weekends.. but it does make me feel slightly bad that I wasnt being very nice by feeding off the the free space idea (by selling loot that they dropped). But i enjoyed it all the same as the lil piratey person i am. FIX arent bad but they do blob up a bit too much so we dont get many fights anymore.
So overall the free space idea doesnt really work because no one wants to be outnumbered loosing their ships for the rest to be happy and mine/npc without (many) problems. So closed space is probably the way to go - but it would be nice to see a new free space alliance  but If you can make it work- good on you

Forget about being nice and all that, and just do what you need to do to have fun and achieve your goals. Learn from others mistakes instead of try to make a whole set of new ones yourself.

If you cant get to an Open 0.0 alliance, you should try one of the Empire Alliances, Like Confederations or other. They may not be out there now, but with time, who knows?

Well, there are quite a number of empire-based alliances.
Altho I'd question the use and actual fabric of these alliances tbh.

The main problem with "free space" (as refered to in this thread" is that people just don't really understand what it is they are talking about (and I promise I don't mean that rudely).
Most people point at CFS as the typical free space alliance and say "ha, that never worked, it was rubbish, means nothing like that can ever work, like ever".
But when you look at it, CFS was murdered by its awful territorial position, its terrible neighbours, all the politicing and internal intrigues. The poorly funded fleets and ineffective (but heroic) resistence blah blah blah. It also tried to be a government and when someone tries to do that it attracts peopple that want to rule over people and soon it all goes to hell.
In my opinion (and mileage may vary) the flaw of "free space" concepts is they set themselves up to fail. They try to guarentee safey and freedom from danger and tbh that is never going to happen and you are stupid to think it ever could. You can't police and patrol enough to keep potential mooks alive no matter how you try (the pirates are clever and good at killing). The only freedom in space is the freedom that comes from knowing how to keep your ship alive and carry on doing what you are doing regardless of threats and danger.
So I'd say "free-space" can work. But its not something any one else can give you. Its something only you can make as an individual by being strong and cunning and fast and resilient and making it impossible for anyone else to take your freedom away. So its not about your Vorsprung durch Technik you know! And its not about the campers that go round and round and round ... etc
Freedom (as in free space) is about making 100m an afternoon in some idiot's "claimed space" and building instajump routes to take the indy full of loot back to market past their blockades and barriers and making a good living to pay for some combat ships to go and have fun skirmishing with the stuffed-hat security guards at 10-1 odds to show that a) you can afford it thanks very much and b) you haven't got the least respect or fear of their little pirate tribe with an alliance hat on and c) your still having fun.
thats my ten cents and I literally been there seen it all and got the tee-shirt since I joined Jericho.
