Im at the point now where Im about to hit the rest of the science skills up that I need for R&D agents. But how do I pick my agents? I know how to find the suckers, just not what sort of missions I will be getting. 'I wanna blow stuff up'
Also am I right in saying I need to skill the research fields they make datacores for? Do I need to skill all their fields or will I only be able to pick one anyway? Do taking those fields to 5 do anything for me?

Edited by: Sinful Injustice on 03/01/2011 22:33:28 R&D agents only give two missions out.
Either transport a small package a couple of jumps away, or provide the agent with an amount of trit.
You can only run one mission per day from each R&D agent and which mission they actually give you is random
And yes you only need one of the agents science skills trained to gain datacores of that type. Training more than one of the skills just allows you to change research (datacores) at some point

I'm looking to get into R&D soon and have some inquiries. How many research jobs can you have active per agent? Is there a skill/way to increase the amount of datacores you get per day from an R&D agent? Is anyone willing to share tips/tricks to get a reasonable income from R&D? My interest in R&D was raised when my friend told me he was earning about 9m a day in datacores passively. Is that really high or reasonable?
I looked through the sticky in here to see if there was already a thread detailing this but did not find one.
Any information is appreciated, thanks.

Thanks Sinful
One mission a day?
Ugh, sounds like it will take forever and I was putting it off to just grind for a few weeks.
On the plus side, all my social skills are 4

I think there is some confusion here.
You do missions for an R&D corp to gain standing. The type of missions depend on the division of the agent used.
Typically at low levels the agents are Manufacturing, which are mostly courier missions. At higher levels, Administration and Public Relations offer a decent mix. A few corps have agents in primarily combat divisions like Internal Security (Ishukone immediately comes to mind).
Once you have enough standing to access a R&D datacore agent, you can do 1 mission a day for that agent, which only rewards you with a day's worth of RP.

Edited by: KaarBaak on 04/01/2011 02:23:01 I'll augment with a bit more:
I plan R&D from the end product backward.
1. Decide what types of data cores you want/need. This can be driven by your invention needs or by isk* 2. Find out what corps' R&D agents sell those types of DCs. Eve-agents 3. Check where that corp's lvl4 R&D agents are located, in case FW or lowsec aversion are issues. Also, you may already have faction with some of these corps. 4. Once you have a target Corp, look that Corp up in-game and go to Corp-info>>agents. 5. Find the highest level/quality agents available to you 6. Commence to grindin' 7. Check the agent list periodically to see if higher level agents become available 7a. Make sure you determine how close you are to a storyline mission before jumping to the next level agent. 8. Once you can access your targeted high-level R&D agent, go to him and start research. 9. Return periodically to collect datacores. 10. Profit.
See? This is the easy passive income everyone talks about. (actually, once you get the research going, it is just a matter of collecting).
* If isk is the driving factor, keep in mind that DCs are subject to the vagaries of the market and game mechanic changes. Switching R&D corps requires you to go through the grind again.

As long as you have at least level 1 in the appropriate science skill and the appropriate level of standing with the R&D corp, you can use any agent which has that skill as one of its research focuses. The most important things:
1) your level in the appropriate science skill. 2) the level of the agent. 3) the effective quality of the agent (its base quality plus improvements by negotiation skill and higher standing with the agent, corp, and faction).
The exact formula is around, but the above is what it's based on. Generally, I let the research points pile up for a few months and then move them all at once to Jita. To my knowledge, Jita is the only effective market for datacores at this time. But YMMV.
For example, I have a few R&D alts (haven't gone hardcore on this yet though I'm slowly building up my alts) cranking out a modest amount of datacores. I use it mostly for cash flow boost when I run really low.
Also, when you start and need to run R&D missions, it's cheaper to buy some trit from a cheap nearby order and move it into the station than buy trit at the station.

Tau and KaarBaak have it pretty well covered here.
- Grind your standing with the CORP, any agent, any division
- Get your R&D agent and begin researching
- After a couple days you will be able to request a mission from the agent (once/day)
- These missions are an RP bonus in addition to what you steadily accumulate over time
I planned my research agents based on the datacores I use most, other players farm, sell, then buy what they need. Due to the way I planned them some are over 20 jumps from my office. If you want to farm for the isk you will want them closer so you can hit the bonus missions more often.

Right, so, confusion reigns supreme ...
I can grind the necessary standings via the corps other agents.
I then get standing with the R&D agent/s. Like with any other corp, basically.
Once I have standing with them I can do daily missions for them to increase the datacore output.
Is that right?

Just thought I'd mention that while everything seems covered the R&D agent missions have been granting me small (well, very small) standings boosts when I choose to do them. I guess that makes the old fear of losing the agent from irrecoverable standings part of the past.

I only do the daily R&D missions when picking-up datacores, or changing agents, or updating Negotiation skill. You must do the mission before stopping work with a R&D mission, or you will lose standing with that agent, and there is no way to gain agent standing back!
It has been changed some patch ago, now doing R&D missions give standing with the agent. About 0.68 for "the special delivery" and 0.20 for mineral acquisition (level 4 agent).
Seeing the required standing for a level 4 agent you can grind missions almost forever before getting an effective quality increase from the standing with the agent.

You can have as many R&D datacore agents working for you as your Research Project Management skill allows.
To be more precise, you can have 1 agent + 1 agent for level of the skill.
