So my Drake got gatecamped last night running back to hisec...people had told me the riches in exploring were greater in losec and to take my drake with a cloak and be careful. Well, she got blown up. I cloaked when I should have ran.
So...why don't I feel like replacing the ship? I have the isk...just no real want.

Exploration = you are the content for low sec / 0.0 dwellers. That's the whole idea behind it.

The moral of this story (for a carebear): Never go to low sec, it is not worth the risk.
The moral of this story (for pirate/pvpers): Descending like a pack of starving, rabid wolves on everyone in low sec reduces your targets.

So use some agile ship, preferably one that can fit a covert cloak. You are nearly untouchable in low sec. Use an unprobable fit and you are suddenly griefing back pirates.
Otherwise you are in danger all the time. You are only safe when you are alone in local (not counting wormholes ofc).
Also: if you use an unprobable fit make sure you don't use drones as they can be scanned down.
Use an alt as a bait (or martyr if you like). E.g. leave the char near the entrance to your mission/plex/whatever  It's very likely the pirates will attack him, giving you a narrow window to escape.

This is all true, good solid advice, however:
You need 2 accounts for it, alternatively with 2 accounts you could easily run 2 separate l4 highsec missions, no way in hell lowsec exploration can earn more than 2 highsec accounts. Also highsec is much less worry (horribly boring but the excitement of escaping pirates is the wrong sort of excitement imo)
Lowsec is where PC rats live, those are really nasty, avoid at all costs.

It happens, you just have to be more aware. you can't outrun every camp every time. You are gaining experience, you know you made the wrong choice, maybe you should hace pulsed ab then cloaked also. Learn to use the people in system on the map, use a noob alt as a scout etc.
There are riches in low sec, I did 3 hours there yesterday and got a pile of Dark Blood stuff and a high grade implant. I reckon those 3 hours got me over 300m isk.
Look on the bright side, drakes are fully insurable and easily replaced

Uhm - statement about low / null sec being more lucrative to do anything is true mate.
But low / null sec arent places to be soloing. I dont mean it as "someone has to hold your hand while you shoot rats" but atleast you have to be surrounded by ppl with green / blue star or atleast blue + next to their name. That way you are aware of situation in your sector and know when to fight and when to run.
U lost a drake? Soloing around insecure space? You think cloak could help you? You cant run in covert force recon if someone puts their mind to it ;) You need to know hes there waiting for you and either go around the camp or bring enough friends to put up a decent fight.
