The first time I seen this I put it down to a glitch and ignored it, however it has happened to me quite a few times now, so I think it's a reproducable issue.
Symptoms:
You are fighting some NPCs. All of them are red boxed and you appear to have all agro, however, one or more of your drones are taking fire and you can see one or more NPCs weapon discharges aimed at your drones.
Can anyone else confirm this?

I have seen it.
It typically happens (at least to me) when a rat have moved so far away from its spawn point, that it stops persuing you, and begins moving back towards its spawn point.

I've seen this happen quite a bit, often with enemies that have me locked but haven't fired yet. I wonder if it's linked to the bug your drones get when they can't kill something quickly and decide to switch targets. IT happened to me in some missions. I thought it was a feature,not a bug. Keeps you on your toes a bit so that it's not so much like mining.

If they would fix "focus fire" so it is absolutely mandatory for your drones it would help this, as it's usually only one or two drones that wander off, usually to a BS at 80Km that hasn't agro'ed yet.

:D I hear ya, but last night it was happening while I was ratting in 0.1 in a Vexor and believe me with a 2 BS + 3 Cruiser spawning right on top of you in a PvP fit T1 Cruiser, I *was* on my toes enough without drone bugs. Not to mention at the same time my other account (mining in a Grav site) just had 1 BS and 3 cruisers warp in and agro my hulk's Hammerheads.
All I needed was a few reds or a gang of outlaw neuts to show up and the party could have really got started :)

higher level npc can have more than one locked target.
why shouldn't they switch targets, if their ai decides to?
you could bug rep, or petition, but i think you already know what the answer will be.
when they show up at a station - bug follow you in warp to a planet - bug mwd out of the belt grid and off into the sunset - bug shooting your drones - working as intended

Wrong. Currently only Sleeper and the upcoming Sansha incursion AI employ target switching. It is a glitch if they are red boxing you but shoot your drones.

"The logs show nothing."
// We don't want any evidence for pesky petitions, so... logger.setSink( "/dev/null" );
