Yeah, that internet-infamous four-letter word. I find it thrown around by many people. I have noticed though that with the older age groups it's not used as often. What connotation does the word bring? Sure, it's negative. And the differences between "newb" and "noob" are apparent as newb often refers to a newer, innocent player who just may not no better. Whereas a noob refers to somebody who...
To somebody who what? Do you ever use the word noob? And why?

Well, I'm trying to understand it a bit more. I see it mostly used by juveniles and honestly a lot of non-English speakers. I just don't know how to put my finger on it. It feels like "noob" is an attempt to not just put somebody down, but to raise yourself up at the same time. Which often, puts this ridiculous grin on my face, making me think they're the noob.
You know?

depends on whos calling who a noob tbh. Here is my list of good reasons someone is a noob
- They lost a missioning ship because of can flipping
- They lost a mining ship because of can flipping
- They were suicide ganked
- They said something blatantly noobish such as that carriers can enter hi sec
- They smacktalk big time until you kill them, then they shut up
- They are less than a year old
- They threatened to hire a crapload of mercs because you killed him
- They have a KD ratio of less than 1:1 on the battleclinic killboard.
- They're just a generic idiot. You know the kind I mean

Noob is so 1998.
Its only the people who have gotten access to the internet in the past few years due to cheap laptops etc who still use it.

No. I do not use the n-o-o-b because it is impolite and degrading to the recipient. It is so filthy and obscene that is is as good as using a racist slur on someone.

Lets examine this list, and keep in mind the person that is making the action OR the person that is the victim
a, b, Person doing the action - result is consequential c Person is a victim of others action d, e, f, h, Immature player or does not have a grasp of the game. g Possible rich younger player (mercs don't come cheap) i Sounds a bit like you to make up these categories
Calling someone a noob or nub is a derogatory reaction by someone that doesn't care or want to spend the time to understand why something was done.

It a old term that someone found by cleverly mixing the insult of calling someone a newbie and a boob at the same time. Kindof played out now someone really needs to come up with a new and clever insult.

somebody who should know better. everybody makes mistakes. whether it's used as insult depends on context and/or intention. among friends it's friendly remainder ("don't be a noob"). toward enemy, it's open season.
then again, there are people that will use it just because they can. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

I thought only hipsters used it to be ironic and retro in how they insult others. Either that or it is being used by those few people left on planet Earth that are just now discovering the internet, via AOL.

Noob is now in the oxford english dictionary. I think there are some memes that find a niche in the language that no other word quite fills, this is what makes them successful.
Most synonyms for noob carry a lot of connotational baggage. Beginner, novice, initiate, rookie, etc already have uses within computer games which tend to denote a lack of experience rather than a lack of intelligence.
There was a niche that needed filled for a derogatory noun with connotations of inexperience.
That was only part of the success story, noob also has the classic swear word structure of a consonant at each end with a vowel in the middle. This is very important when shouting in to a microphone, eg dictor 1 has just bubbled his own fleet:
dictor 1 > sh!t sorry guys player 1 > shiiiiiiiit FC > dictor you're such a f'ing noob player 2 > noooooob
In common with swear words like sh!t and fu<k the consonants at each end can be spat out with true vehemence while the vowel in the middle can be as short or as long as you want it to be, this gives the word remarkable flexibility in its pronunciation.
The fact that it's structured like a classic swear word also means you can use it as an adjective (that corp is very noobish), verb (I'm noobing about in a rifter) and many other interesting variations.
Love it or hate it the word noob is good at what it does and I suspect it will be around for many years to come.
Ok noobs, that's the end of your english lesson, you can go back to picking your noses and throwing things at Siigari now.

Well, think there is still a few high sec carriers left from before the nerf. But they can't be used for anything except showing off, or mining in the case of the Veldnaught...even though it's not a carrier.

Good post
Well, the word gets used so much in certain game enviroments that it is starting to have a different meaning for me at least. My personal opinnion about the word is that it tells more about the user than the one its used on. Never been called a noob myself in eVe, tho i have little more than basic understanding about the game, and I think that it tells loads about much about the community.

I just use like banter. I don't think anyone really means it to be offensive, if they do; I'm not sure it really has any impact.
