It's my understanding that the new character creation process will be initiated during Tuesdays update.
If you want to save portraits of your characters the way they look now - and haven't already done so - I'm not sure ... but I can see a probability that you will no longer have access to their old portraits in the near future. Orbiting vs. Kiting Faction Schools |

That is correct as stated in a recent Dev Blog. Originally by: CCP Lopi Another heads up for all our players; you will have to recreate your character portrait using the new character creator after it has been deployed. This means that your old character portrait will not be accessible anymore!

So, yeah, saving the portraits is a good idea.

Log in if you are not logged in. And it will pop up all your character portraits. Right-Click and 'Save Picture As...' ------------------------ Jint Hikaru - Miner / Salvager / Explorer / SpaceBum "I've got a couple of Strippers on my ship... and they just love to dance!" ------------------------ |

Actually, one of the devs is working on some sort of archive, we just don't know if it will be easily searchable.

I saved my portrait, but there's no guarantee the new character will look anything like the old one.

And ... yes.
For all you new people who joined since the last update - as Pan Dora noted - start a long learning skill.
CCP doesn't do a terrible job of updating ... but every now and then they screw something up ... and they have had colossal screw ups in the past.
For me ... I usually just go play another game for few days until things are sorted over here at EVE ...

Is clicking your portrait after a post the best way to get the best picture to save or is there a better place to get a bigger version?

Depending on your OS you'll have the largest portraits from when you made your characters in a CCP\EVE\t_eve_tranquility\cache\Pictures\Portraits files are in .png for XP, that under documents and settings for me, local settings, application data.
--WIS/Incarna/Ambulation where microtransactions come to play, and uh bars.-- |

The best way to get the largest version of your portrait is to go ingame and right click on yourself in local/corp chat and click "Capture Portrait", this will save it to your logs/captures directory.
Though you only have an hour left to do it at this point.
