Screen goes black with loading bar, then ... nothing. Client doesn't crash, and I'm still able to log off or quit (esc menu works fine)
E8400 cpu, 8800gtx graphics card, so those are fine... Ideas?

Same problem, nothing else is affected but when I go into char creation screen, there it sits, frozen.
How much alt-tabbing did you do?

I think I'm basically having the same problem, except the Visual Studio debugger pops up and tells me the program has stopped responding. Starting the game without going into the character creator works fine.

Edited by: Frank Millar on 18/01/2011 20:42:37 Trying to re-create an existing character gives me the loading bar and the never ending black screen.
Making a new character (empty slot) takes me to the character creator immediately.
Sooo....
Edit: after selecting race, bloodline and gender the swirly thing keeps swirling and the thing hangs again.

A workaround I use, and have used since Sisi is as follows:
Hit ESC and bring up the options screen. Tab around a few of these screens and after a few seconds the character creator should nudge into action. You may need to fiddle with graphics options in order to be able to see the hairstyles but just once you've finished creating just put them back to where they were and you will be fine.
Of course this all goes to show that by the time Incarna is released we will need to have upgraded our rigs if we want to be able to see our avatars moving around.

Tried this without results. Still blackscreen only for char creation.

Same problem here. My computer supports SSE2 and 3, I updated the graphic card controllers, to no avail.
When I try to create a new character, it takes me to the creator BUT it gets stuck after selecting Bloodline and Gender. The swirly thing keeps spinning, and there it stays.
If I try to use the character creator with an existing character, it doesn't get past the first progress bar.

I am having a similar problem, but performs slightly differently. I am trying to enter the EVE Character Creator from a Lenovo T410 Laptop with a pretty bad GPU. What happens: - Character Creator loads - I get to choose the faction/race/bloodline, click next - Character Creator loads, loads... and window closes, re-opens, goes back to login menu. After a few tries and fiddling with graphics settings, I managed to get t the character itself, but after adjusting a few traits, same thing happened: window closing, re-opening, back to login menu. Logs show NOTHING. Works as intended? I hope not :) No biggie though, I have a much better system at home and will be able to use the character creator fine there. Just saying that I can replicate the issue on the laptop. Confirming its existence :) ...gis sdrawkcaB |

same issue. can log into the game just fine, but character creator hangs on load bar. if i alt tab in and out, i just get a black screen, the game menu doesn't show up if i hit esc. game plays fine, played for a couple hours on patch day after patch.
i'm just worried about what will happen when the grace period is over and they haven't fixed this.

I have a similar problem, but with spectacularly worse results. To whit: 1) I can log into the game fine; 2) At the character select screen, the character portraits of both characters show the generic "no picture" picture (as seen in my avatar to the left). Fine; 3) I click on a character to enter game. I get the pop-up saying I have the option of doing CharGen. I say OK; 4) Progress bar loads. At the half-way point it slows to a crawl (something choking?), then slowly over 5 minutes goes to full; 5) things sit there for another 5 minutes. Then an audible click and screen flicker as my video resets and I get the message "Graphics Driver stopped responding. Re-set to safe mode."
At this point one of three things happens: a) The screen goes black with a blinking underline in the upper left, as in the old "DOS Prompt" days. Nothing else occurs, and I can not to anything else but kill power on my machine (Control+alt+delete several times to force a re-boot doesn't even do anything). Or... b) The game exits and I am now in 16 color mode at 640x480 resolution. I can reboot normally, and on rebooting things return to normal. Or... c) screen goes completely black and nothing responds till I kill power and reboot. Not even a blinky underline...
In all cases, my system on re-boot states that it is recovering from a serious error, insists on the disk check, etc. When prompted at the error notification on Windows rebooting, I send error report to Microsoft.
I have yet to try and run the game itself, but I'm betting since nothing in-game has changed graphically (that I am aware of), chances are it will run fine.
I never bothered to try the new stuff on SISI. What little free time I had I played EVE on Tranquility; I figured things would be OK for the update, right...?
System specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Intel Celeron CPU - 2.40GHz 2048MB Ram (2.048 gig RAM) DirectX version 9.0c Video Card: NVidia GeForce 6200 - 256meg RAM. Video Drivers: NVidia Driver 6.14.0012.6658 (English) dated 1/7/2011
1 EVEOnline account, with 2 characters.
Yes, I undated my drivers before even looking on the forums. Above bad results continue after the update.
And yes, I know my system is not up to most of you peoples' expectations/standards. For all you "you should upgrade your machine" types, in this crushing economy I am fortunate to have a job and be able to pay rent and food. So an upgrade to my machine and purchasing the latest-and-greatest Windows is unavailable.
I know I can probably play in-game without doing CharGen on my characters just fine. Until the change becomes mandatory. Unless there is a 'fix' with this, I'll be forced to stop playing at that point.

Same here... can't create any new characters as it doesn't get beyond the "bloodline" option, and I can't model any existing characters - it freezes right at the "Entering character creation" dialog box... goes all the way to 100% on progress bar then... nothing.
This was happening on sisi and figured they'd get it fixed before release. Guess not.
CCP: Fix is definitely needed for this!! BEFORE the grace period expires! Expire the grace period without a fix and we're hosed!!

Temporary work around...
As mentioned somewhere before, ESC to settings after the bar loads character creation. Click through the tabs (seems the last one is a good one to use) and the character generator will work fine.

Same deal... fills the progress bar and then just... stops. Message disappears when I hit escape, but then client locks up. Recently did a fresh reinstall, so not wanting to do THAT again.
Is my video card too old? NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT. That's what I was assuming but since others with better cards are having same issues...

Managed to get around it and even created a portrait for an alt I created.
Started the client, turned all graphic settings to minimum, and the creator loaded.
Then, I set it all to my liking again, and it worked fine. No choppiness, no frame rate issues, no lag, no jaggies. All fine as usual.
Today I'll do my main.

Worked around the problem with the ESC trick.
Turned a few things on and off at random and hit the apply buttons, then hit esc, and the creator sputtered to life.

I have a freezing problem also, mostly when i try to take one of the pictures at the end of the creation process and sometimes when I have hair type chosen and I try to choose makeup or viceversa
I think they forgot to mention that to play the character creator we need better graphics cards, I don't have this problem on SiSi and use the exact same settings.

For me, the character design screen always loads successfully but when I try to go on to the portrait design screen it never finishes loading. Just sits there with the little spinning icon. The settings tricks mentioned in this thread do not have any effect on my problem.
My GPU is an Nvidia GeForce 6600GT, a faithful little thing that has aged gracefully and can consistently run the character design screen with high quality shaders enabled at a tolerable lag level (if the drivers are up to date). My CPU is an AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition, which definitely supports SSE2.
I submitted a bug report yesterday. _____________________________ ¬DesuSig |

The "hitting escape (twice), fiddle with the menus and press escape again" is a bit of a hit or miss situation.
I've now been able to replicate it a few times, but the number of times it won't work are just as high.
nVidia 8800GTX (like te OP), btw. The card may be a few years old, but it certainly is not out of date, and I doubt this is the real problem.

Load bar then black. MSI U120 here. lol Best can do for now. Anyway, ESC thing didn't work for me, but I noticed something... After closing the ESC menu and seeing no change I hit ESC to try again, but this time the menu doesn't show... but it's there... the mouse icon is still there and changes when over where an option would be. Clicking does give a blip noise. You can hit ESC and watch the cursor change to tell when the menu is supposed to be showing. Hope it helps. Also, thanks for updates to the hotkey stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------- "We are aware and operating at full capacity." - Experiment H197 |

Left it there all day yesterday and never once loaded the creator. I tried on a friend's machine today and it managed to load the creator, but only a silhouette of the characters showed.
And yes I tried messing with graphic settings, escing, tabbing, window mode, ect - nothing has worked. |

Tried it on my normal pc at home, and it went straight in. Athlon 1090T with ATI HD 4890, running the latest 10.12 catalyst drivers.
Obviously my work pc here (Standard Dell Vostro 200) just doesn't cut it with the Character Creator, tried it on all settings from low to as high as it could go.

Obvious driver compatibility issue i'd say.
I am getting the same thing decribed by others - loading bar stops at end and then nothing else happens. Escape menu trick does not work for me - half the time in fact i can't even get the escape menu to come up.
Now, I say I have been lucky being able to play at all - pc specs are (get ready to LOL) Acer aspire one netbook, 1024x600 resolution, intel express mobile 945 integrated graphics and a one point something ghz atom cpu. On a good day I would get like 8 fps :)
Game itself still works, just not the char creator.

Are CCP axtually going to do something about this? They demand we all have to have new pictures then they release a fracked up system that we have to use within a month or we can't play!!!!
