I couldn't get character creation screen to start for my existing character. The pop-up window displayed a progress bar that got to the end and then my system hung up. I waited for at least 5 minutes to see if the creator would work. Eventually, I had to reboot my system. When I rebooted my graphics card was hosed up. Now when I boot my system I either get nothing to the screen or my resolution is stuck at 1024x768.
Obviously this is now a problem with my graphics card and not Eve, but my GeForce 7900 GS was working perfecting until I attempted to use the character creation system on high resolution.
If you have an older graphics card like me, I suggest you don't try and use the character creation system yet (to see if this is a chronic problem) or only use low resolution.

You should petition, like that poor guy whose power supply broke up after installing the initial Incursions expansion patch. Probably the antialiasing was too much.

And they'll fax him a new graphics card or what?

Well my high creation settings definitely strained and overheated my graphics card. I have to let the computer sit turned off for 10 minutes just to get the screen to work when I boot up.
It was an old card and certainty not a great card.

NVidia users are usually pretty familiar with overheating issues. Had this trouble for years and still sticking to the company for some reason (probably mild ******ation on my part).

I thought my poor Geforce 8300 was gonna melt after following the recommended advice and setting it to high.
Spent most of the time watching the egg timer. Eventually I just chose whatever was quickest so I could exit creation screen and get in game.
This plus a disappointing amount of customisable options, made for a somewhat lacklustre experience!
Wish I could afford a new GFX card

I did a clean install to the latest (266.58 NVIDIA) drivers and reloaded my monitor drivers as well.
I am pretty sure the need for a cool down is a sure sign of a new hardware malfunction.

Last Christmas I destroyed my (work) laptop by playing Eve for 14 days straight. The Dell laptop GPU overheated and killed the motherboard... (known flaw in the Nvidia GPU)... |

It runs just as badly on those as well.

The high-shader version of the character generator is much more resource-intensive than the rest of the game. With the optimizations and fixes introduced with this patch, I can run the in-space portion of the game with textures and LOD on high with virtually no client-side lag using 'low' shaders. Ditto for the character generator. However, with shaders set to high, it takes three to five minutes by the clock to move between load screens on the character generator, and the character generator itself runs at one or two frames per second. I see a new frame every second or so, quite literally.
So if you're running on an older machine, or are using a laptop with integrated video that was made before 2010 or so, do yourselves a favor and set shaders to low, else you might end up pulling the plug on your computer instead of waiting a full minute or two for the ESC menu to show up, and another minute or two to be able to exit the game.

Good advice, cheers

1 GB factory-overclocked 460 GTX with ubercooling here, everything on max (1600x1024 borderless windowed mode, physical simulation, high detail, antialias x2 ingame and forced to 32x from graphics driver "enhance" settings). I was getting what I could visually guesstimate around 15-ish FPS (why foes CTRL-F only work ingame now ? It used to work on the login screen too, and I hoped it would work inside the char creator too), and temperature raised to a relatively steady 62-64 degrees Celsius (for reference's sake, usually inside EVE, it usually hovers around 50-52 C with FPS limited at 85 due to monitor refresh rate) for the entire duration of my fiddling (at least half an hour). It usually idles below 30 C.
So yeah, you can bet that if you do select everything to the max and your vidcard is not properly ventilated, you might get it to melt down. _
