Pro-tip: If you get this ridiculously defensive over NPCs, who are not even real people and have no choice in what they do or capacity to do anything really offensive... this may not be the game for you.
Or possibly you've become so dulled to the routine your NPC master has set for you and the sting of his whip that you don't even think for yourself and don't mind having the computer tell you what to do. If YOU want to let some NPC tell you what to do - it doesn't bother me. It's just a pain in the ass when I have to do it to grind standings.
I came here from Planetside - where aside from a few robot gun turrets - there were no NPC's. Everything you did in that game involved other - living - players. It was a shooter - so it was nothing but PVP.
People playing EVE get all indignant about how much better a game it is than WoW - but - most of you are still out there running "quests" for some NPC - now aren't you? So how is what you're doing so much better than a game you claim to despise?
Of course - the PVP guys are exempt from that ... to whatever degree they're PVPing.
*shrug*
Here's a pro-tip for you - I'm just having some fun pointing out the fact that mission running isn't all that great either. Some people may well find mining boring - then they shouldn't do that. Others such as myself - find mission running boring - but ... EVE is such that you really have trouble getting around it so I run missions for standings.
No ... I'm not being defensive and don't need a hug - but - after hearing a litany of constant carping from mission runners about mining - why is it that YOU guys are so defensive the moment someone turns the tables and starts pointing out some of the flaws in what YOU do?
Hunh?
Again - this is all in good fun - as I really don't care what you guys do - or what you guys think. I just think that every now and again someone should stand up for us miners! By Damn!
Ha! Ha!

Mining = Steady stream of income that stays pretty consistent based on what you're mining. Also has a direct time:ISK ratio.
Missioning = Boom or Bust income. Because of uncertainty of missions/payout quality, bounties, loot and salvage - mission runners can expect good days and bad days. For every 50-100M ISK mission, you're going to get a lot of 500K ones.

Yeah. That's pretty much been my experience.

Many players write off mining, but this game is about alts... lots and lots of them.
Mining, production, and trading are all very scalable with alts (and often those alts only need minimal training) whereas mission running with more than two accounts at once is just painful.
I'm of a similar mindset to those who say "it's for chumps who want to stay poor," except i'm talking about casual mission running. For the same amount of time input (with a tiny bit more cash up-front) you can have four accounts running a full productoin to trade operation and make far better income.
Ultimately it's a question of complexity and just how willing you are to THINK for your profits. If you can't think past "just wanna make some isk asap with my one character," then mission running is for you. If you can comprehend the logistics of a supply chain and reading the market somewhat then you will be far more rewarded for your efforts doing mining and production.
