Got a little free time and discovered a few Anime series on Netflix. Was surprised to find out that some of them are pretty good.
I've never taken the genre very seriously, but after some luck I'm willing to give it a shot.
Some I've liked so far: - Fullmetal Alchemist - Darker than Black - Appleseed
I've also seen and liked Akira.
Anyone got any recommendations they care to share?
Thanks

I second the votes for Code Geass and Death Note.
Death Note is amazing the first time you watch it (although I've never been able to rewatch it)
Code Geass is one of my favourites, if not my favourite, anime series :)

Check out FMA: Brotherhood. If you liked FMA, you'll wonder why the hell they even made it after watching Brotherhood.
Ghost in the Shell doesn't *need* a recommendation, you either watch it or ninjas kill your family.
Seconding the recommendation of Elfen Lied. It's full of bloodshed and nudity, but a mindblowing series.
Spice and Wolf. Little bloodshed, small amounts of action, but after watching it I guarantee you will spend days of your life attempting to play the market here on EVE.
Gundam; Gundam Unicorn (despite the lol name) has been simply gorgeous thusfar, and everyone likes giant robots blowing things up.
Gunslinger Girl. Win.

I'm working my way through the old Robotech on Netflix. It was made in 1985 and is really reallly reallllly showing it's age but it is worth watching. At least the first 27 episodes or so.
Other recommendations if nobody has said them already: Trigun Trinity Blood Blood+
OH and on Neflix is Soul Eater. It is silly but worth watching.

I would advice avoiding robotech if you can. It's not an actual anime series, but 3 different anime series edited in to a single series by a US company. If you like that flavor though, macross series should be a good anime for you and it's one of the anime robotech uses for it's own footage.

Rounding it out with - Blood+ - Elfen Lied - FMA: Brotherhood
Looks like I've got my next movies picked out for me.
Unfortunately, it looks like I might have to buy FMA: Brotherhood and Elfen Lied. Netflix doesn't stream either of those titles at this time.
I've watched a little bit of Gunslinger Girl. There's only so much prepubescent hardened killer waifs I can take.

Edited by: Karma on 27/01/2011 23:29:36 Tenchi Muyo OVA 1, 2 and Ryou-Ohki is always good. Heroic Age. Sci-fi with lots of space-battles. and If you want good and lighthearted movies (sort of the disney of anime) you might want to try pretty much anything by Studio Ghibli (Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the valley of the wind). Munto. Awesomeness. Bakemonogatari (pure sexy weirdness) Kara no Kyoukai (not for the faint of heart) Onegai Teacher (love-story, comedy, sci-fi) Stellvia of the Universe. Scryed. Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko. Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works might be worth checking out too. after you've seen it, you can play the games too for even more awesome. ;)
I've left out the drama- and slice-of-life-series...
PS: failing at read-comprehension ... some of these prolly wont be on netflix. (especially unlimited blade works... or the ghibli stuff.. but the latter is very easy to find regardless).

Let me put in a plug for Darker than Black for those who haven't seen it.
About 25 episodes with a complex storyline the unfolds over time. The characters are interesting and the concept of Dolls and Contractors is a unique twist on the super hero / villain formula.
It's pitched at more of an adult level, which is also a good thing.
The version I saw was developed by the "Bones" studio. The same team that did the animation for Fullmetal Alchemist and a few others. Their work was pretty solid but certainly not groundbreaking.

and then you add Lynn Minmay singing a lovesong in the middle of a spacebattle, where half of the enemy turns to your side because of said song, and it's aaaaaaaaaalright.
very corny tho. ---

I want to start watching animes too. I want something based in space, and also land. but with no aliens in it. at least no humanoid aliens, as they suck imo. except the mumbari in Babylon 5, as they had good explnation to why.
Anyawys, soemthing like firefly but anime would be nice.

Cowboy Bebop. comes immediately to mind. and then I thought a bit about Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED destiny. a bit long, and a bit emo at times, perhaps.
oh yeah.. Mars daybreak was also kind of nice.
and you can never go wrong with some Zone of the Enders.. space, land, no aliens. giant mecha though.

I wondered why this was thus far lacking in the thread.
