Yes, one more "look at my avatar" thread. I really don't care if you find me attractive, though. I'm more interested in how my lighting looks.
I'm fairly happy with my portrait in the 512 version, however looking at it here and in game, something about the lighting just doesn't look right to me. Maybe there's too much glare from the light source on the right? Or maybe it's where my character is sitting in the portrait frame.. I can't quite figure it out. I was going for a "just inside the shadows, mysterious, you think you see me but do you really see me?" kinda mood. I know there are many visually talented folks lurking around here! I'd appreciate some advice/opinions on how to make it look just a little better before attempting one more edit.
Thanks in advance!

Dim down the lighting if you want to look mysterious, or zoom in a bit and maybe look downward a bit

definitely the lighting, I had the same issue on another character and didnt notice it until after it was submitted. Go for the head tilt or a slight turn to the right or left to reduce the effect of the lights.

probably mostly the hair but something about him makes think of a very angry Mittens
give him a puppy and he'll maybe light up a little

I find all the portraits featuring low lighting, dark coloured background, dark coloured foreground to be visually unimpressive and lost in the sea other low contrast portraits, there's nothing to catch the eye.
Just because you want to look mysterious, does not mean you have to hide in your shadow.

Try to take a shot from an above angle and lower the head a little. If you want mysterious then you want to make it hard to look your avatar directly into the eyes. The avatar itself should not look like he is avoiding the camera, but more the camera should be on an odd angle.
Or let me put it this way. It is the observer who thinks the avatar looks mysterious. So the observer needs to be looking at it from an angle that does let one see all the facial features. Anything can look mysterious until it is seen in the right light. --

Eli, all I would say is that the CC has serious limits that you have to overcome. For the char to look seriously realistic given the current limitations, one has to be very careful about background and lighting because the lights dont effect the background or visa versa. An idea is to come to a compromise on this. Either set your heart on a background and then set the lighting to suit, so the lightest part of the background shows the side of your face lit up, or do it the other way around. Just a thought |

Hello Eli.
In my opinion, you need to bring the camera in closer. The torso+head shots tend not to stand out when viewing the picture in forum size or chat box size. You can zoom in more and still get that mysterious look. The examples below shows what you can do with shadows but still gives an interesting look when viewed in the smaller formats.
Examples:
Brock Nelson Khajin Kheldan Vladimir Kimrov
I hope that helps you out!
Kisses!

Edited by: Ravenclaw2kk on 28/01/2011 04:20:55 You might want to zoom in a bit more too. imo an avatars face should take at least 1/2 of the portrait. looking at generic clothes and backgrounds isn't too interesting

Currently male avatars seem far more varied and look far more human on average, perhaps because people are subconsciously trying to make female avatars they`d want to date.

Edited by: Violettt on 29/01/2011 05:29:23 looks good to me, I would suggest changing the background though. The colors on your character, and the colors in the background are too simlar IMO. You seem kind of "camouflaged" so to speak, and don't stand out much.
Also try to find a background that meshes with the lighting.

Play with each of the lights from different angles. Click each light, then start on the medium intensity setting. Move your character around A LOT. Twist the camera, twist your character's head, really get each angle of light down.
The EXACT same pose with your character at a 30 degree rotation may look completely different if you spin your character a few degrees either way.
To create an almost 'snapshot' effect, try to hide any shadows. For a stage-lighting effect, keep all shadows at the rear but have long, contrasty shadows falling down your neck.
The best thing you can really do is just play with the lights. It took me DAYS until I found a setting and a pose I liked. After tweaking the intensity I found this to be quite attractive. It just takes patience.

If you want to get ideas on how to light a "moody" avatar I would recommend studying some film noir clips and posters.
When I created this avatar I was looking for a sort of "proud but melancholy" feel, so I spent some time looking at portraits of world leaders who had been in power during times of conflict. That really helped me with the pose and lighting.

Portraits are all about the lighting and position of both body, head, and of course expression. But also try to go for a background that matches the mood you want to come across.
Didn't want a happy look-at-me character for Jinx and I think that worked out well.

For someone who seems to know a lot about lighting, you sure got yours wrong. Your portrait doesn't stand out at all. And you like a 12 year old who got into her moms makeup!
Terrible job.
