I recently acquired a Maelstrom BS BPO with M.E. 0, T.E 2, and I'm actually relatively new to the whole "Building Things" sort of business.
I have it in the lab, bumping up it's M.E. to 5 before I even consider building anything with it. Once it's out, what do I do with it? What can I expect in terms of profit with this thing?
The reason I ask is because I don't have much capital to begin with - I just returned to the game after a year's hiatus, finding my hanger filled with a smattering of module/T1 Cruiser BPO's and half-decent skills in Industry and Science. I got the Maelstrom BPO as a gift, and I want to apply it toward making me ISKies.
TL;DR, noob manufacturing toon has a BPO way out of her league, needs help making ISKies out of it.

Get yourself a way to calculate how much mineral goes into it (hint: dedaf's industrial tool or make a spreadsheet of your own) and check prices in your average market. You're probably not going to strike a profit unless you have Product Efficiency 5 and the BPO researched higher than ME 5!

Eek. I'm getting it's ME to 5 right now - 28 days to go! I'm just curious if the idiom is true that BS's churn out a goodly sum when put into full production...What can I expect, with the proper skills and a developed BPO?

This is true. You will need to research BS BPO's to atleast an m.e of 10 to start making profit. Although it may take a while, it will pay off in the end. Until your BPO is researched, i would reccommend buying BPC's that are already researched from the contracts menu. If you are new to manufacturing, I would reccommend starting with something smaller than a BS unless you have a hulk and a lot of time. also to reduce the time that a bpo takes to manufacture, I would reccomend researching the T.e of the bpo to at least 10 as well.

^^ This.

^^ And this. Keep in mind that while BSes turn a nice profit, they are 20k m3 so you'll probably end up hauling one at a time unless you have a freighter.

And keep in mind that mining your stuff yourself does NOT reduce the cost of the materials ;)

In essence, stick with keeping my assembly lines of Thoraxes, Slashers, Ruptures, and misc until I can get the BPO up to snuff. :) Thanks for the advice, all. :)
As a sn: I can train freighters in nine days if I were not so busy boosting metallurgy to V, so moving the goodies won't be a problem (once I can get the isk for the freighter).

My advice is don't just focus on ships. There are lots of cheap ways to get into manufacture - small rigs often need no research to be perfect ME, and they are cheap to build.
If your experiementing with the interfaces etc, try it out first with something dirt cheap like small rigs, and when you know how it all works take the leap into BS's. Itll give you a chance to get some manufacture practice in while your researching the BS Blueprint

Run the numbers on google docs i.e. build yourself a spreadsheet [it helps if you build it as you'll know / understand a lot more that goes though stuff]
me 5 is a good start - Production Efficencey 5 is going to be needed TBH
work your costs right though the process. --

Well, not entirely true it you use a nice macro at home, whilst you are at work. Free minerals 4tw, know?

Those minerals can still be sold for isk...

Yes, but their acquisition doesn't cost anything, apart from a little bit of electricity.

They still have intrinsic value on the market that could be better realized than turning them into ships. You can either consider them free and lose money, or apply their real cost (as if you had brought them) and keep your operation profitable, else you may as well just sell the minerals; On the other hand, if you want to put up BS for less than their real value "because the minerals are free" I'll happily buy them off you for profit. :)

You should investigate the relevant BPC market.
I have no idea how well BS blueprint copies sell. However, you lack the capital to actually make battleships in quantity, and presumably don't have the skills to make them and sell them in a cost-effective way (or haul them to market, for that matter!).
Thus, making and selling BPC off of your BPO might be the easiest way to monetize this windfall. It'll also give you some time to train up the skills to become a producer, seller, and/or hauler.
Remember to take into account the cost of copying the blueprint when you decide on a price. Also keep in mind that Industry reduces the time it takes to copy a blueprint. Also note that the only real market for blueprint copies is in Jita, most of the time.
The BPC market might be terrible - I have no idea. Seems a lot more feasible than you manufacturing it, though. At worst, you might consider selling the BPO itself off after you've researched it.

Sell it and buy a lvl4 mission running ship. The time and investment u need to start producing battleships, it isn't efficient.

50,000m3 last I looked, having a freighter is pretty much essential unless you can sell them with some regularity in the station you build at.
I have a few bs BPOs and well tbh I haven't produced one since before the insurance changes. I think the most profit I made was ~10m per ship. (was actually a bit more as I had some nice lowball buy orders, and was selling at inflated prices )
but hey, just take the mineral prices*quantity needed add em up, should tell you right there if there is any reason to produce.
