Perhaps this is no big deal, but it bothers me never the less. How can we know the precise identity of a pilot in a ship 50 KM away ?
I am aware of if a ship that can hide its corp identity can cause all sort of gameplay problems. But being able to know who is captain of a neutral/hostile ship make no sense. Shouldn't a ship be identified by corporation (Corporation Ensign) and her name?
IRL ships often fly flags of another nation (Flag of convenience). I won't go into that because that is a Pandora's box.
just my 2 cents.

Edited by: Brutus B on 29/01/2011 05:27:32 In the fiction of Eve, it seems to have a lot to do with the neocom. A system embedded into ships and pods that automatically transmit the idenity of a pilot, and allow him to communicate with others. The neocom also transmit the location of a pilot to some degree which is why local channel works in explored systems (non wh-space as being too far away from neocom-relay satilites is the explanation given for having local channel blinded in wormhole space.) The ticker tag of the corp, and the name of the ship is also displayed if you target the ship under the icon that pops up on the hud.

You probably wouldn't want to turn that off since the overview and sensors, in theory, are routed through that. Incoming and outgoing data and all that. It would make sense that you would be able to spoof such information. Hell you should be able to spoof ship type when you are out of visual range i.e. fool 360 scanner/probe results. Although sig radius size would tip off a probe spoof. Still interesting.
This is not the alt you are looking for. |

Honestly, I think the name of the ship should be what is visible in the overview. Leave the name of the pilot for chat channels.

actually you should probably see only some ID for each object in the overview like you get when probing. additional information like ship name, type and pilot becomes available when getting closer or performing extra actions like active scanning or something.
any fleet actions like warping to a member or chatting means of course you reveal some information of yourself, so others could use this information then too... to be able to be warped to someone needs to broadcast his position...
... just some thoughts... would change pretty much everything how eve works so far... |

Cause it makes the game more fun. Same way that having engines point to the rear with nothing to counter their thrust is more fun. I think the ideal spaceship would be a sphere with gyro's rotating thrust vectoring, but who wants a game full of thrustering balls?

Actually, we can turn off the neocom. You just need to press ESC and then "Quit game", and that's it. You don't know who is piloting that ship 50km from you anymore :)

you are removed from the grid when you log off. If you weren't, everyone would still know you are the person floating in that ship. ask any supercap pilot :D
