Edited by: garus banta on 29/01/2011 05:23:06 Ice mining is a waste of time, it's one of the most poorly designed game mechanics ever invented and is for people who play games by NOT doing anything for 20 minutes, which is the average ice cycle for 10 ice.
It's boring it sucks we ALL hate it, and the majority of us doing it are macroing that ****nit and it's totally understandable.
Ice mining is inhuman, it's as bad as the PI click fest, which BTW is WAY better since the new patch so THANKS for listening.
Now please remove all ice belts and all ice mining and just GET RID OF IT! WE HATE ICE MINING! It is a waste of time I feel offended for being forced to mine and PAY you money on a monthly basis.
Why ice adds NO value:
1. It is F U C K I N G booring. 2. You need to constantly do it if you own a POS and are forced to play a dull and poorly designed mini game. 3. It ruins the market due to botting. 4. It is a cancer in eve and should be CUT OUT. 5. It absolutely does not support CCP claim of excellence 6. ZERO players will miss ice mining!!!!
ICE mining is an abandoned idea and it should be removed completely because it adds nothing but frustration. More pvp less of this crap!
and finally
F U C K ice mining!!!!

If less people mined it, prices would increase and more people would in return try and start mining it 3. If ice mining was removed, what do you think the bots would do? Pack up and go to WoW? no, they would start mining normal asteroids even more.

Supported.
I agree 100 percent, and I've only spent 2 hours of my entire eve career (spanning years now) ice mining. I did about an 1 hour of it in one big chunk hauling ice for an ice miner when I was a new player, and I did the rest of it basically to see how long a cycle would take on my first mining barge.
Several Pos Fuels can be made from them already. So, it's easy to see potential in eleminating ice fuels and replacing it with ice-like PI fuels.
All ice mining specific skills could be comped to those who specd characters in that field in the same way learning skills were replaced.

Good points too: but it's so boring that the fact other people do it is on the level of self torture... Letting them do so seems like Cruel and unusual punishment. I'd much rather they come out to lowsec or wormhole space, or nulsec and get blown up then imagine them sitting for hours with eve open while they watch tv and just ice mine all day. In fact, I imagine hell and ice mining have lots in common. It seems a waste of a capsuleers time.

I apologize for the foul language but I don't have any other words that are equivalent to express my dislike of a game mechanic and as a paying customer I demand better service.
Can you honestly say that you enjoy ice mining? Do you think it adds value to game play, Nevermind your theoretical what if less people mined ice example, as a game and think of it purely as a game mechanic do you enjoy ice mining and think it's fun??

What is your proposal to add ice components into the game? You can't just stop ice mining without offering some way to get the items you recieve from the ice.
Perhaps ice mining should have larger yields or reduce cycle time to cut down on the tedium. Prices would fluctuate but that is gonna happen to all kinds of things in the game when changes are made, but atleast you get rid of the mindnumbing boredom of ice mining.

I'm sorry, but I like Ice Mining. It gives me something to do while doing homework (tossing the Ice to a corpie's Orca is the only real work). Also lets me browse the web and play EvE at the same time.

I agree Ice mining is the worst thing ever in eve
Replace it with this :
Make isotopes / heavy water / ozone harvest through PI.
Or
Make Ice mining somewhat interesting by getting rid of all ice belts. Create a Signature site that you scan down and when you arrive has a hand full of Comets in it that can be harvested by Mackinaws. The cycle time, Size of Ice blocks, yield of these blocks should all be reduced to 1/3 of their current scale. So you don't have to sit there all day just to get a few blocks. This way ice is mined in 6-10 min cycles will yield the same amount of resources but will make finding them a bit more difficult then having a field of never ending ice rocks that will never disappear ever just sitting around for macros to exploit.

How about NEITHER! Seriously think about it ok? What would you rather be doing in an online game that you pay for monthly. Spend hours mining ad nauseum, or focus on PVP and make ice mining something similar to research points?
I would even be fine with using PI for fuels to replace ice mining.
Ice mining is a pointless WASTE of time and money and if you're not outraged then you are a moron because you are essentially paying money, real money NOT to play a game, when you mine ice for 20 minutes it's identical to sitting in JAIL for 20 minutes or waiting for something. The game mechanic sucks and I feel cheated EVERY single time I have to mine ice for fuel.
ICE MINING NEEDS TO GO AWAY FOR GOOD!

Just reforming it is needed.
Move to a system more like ore where you get x m3 per cycle and need 1000 m3 to refine.

First off, calm down guy. You are the one that posted a rant about something in game and never provided any type of solution.
Second, I don't ice mine so whether it stays or goes away doesn't affect me, however there are people that do enjoy that part of the game so consider that into any solution you propose.
Third, why should I be required to feel outrage about ice mining? I play the parts of the game I enjoy and give my iskies to someone that enjoy's parts of the game I don't.
Maybe leave everything as it currently is but quadruple the refining yield for ice. Would reduce overall cost of POS fuels and would reduce the length of time someone has to spend mining for themselves. Win/Win.

To be blunt, it would be better for the game as a whole of ice products were seeded on the market as NPC sell orders. Real players don't ice mine anyway, because its too god damned boring and takes too long for the reward. At least that way the bots wouldn't have an inexhaustible supply of money. Yes! Lets use Ice planets to make ice products.
Make isotopes a processed commodity that can be made on ice planets with a basic facility.
Combine it with another processed commodity like oxygen and get oxygen isotopes.
Same for helium, hydrogen and w/e else.
I'm not entirely sold on the idea of having Ice planets replace ice mining 100%, but it would be a welcome supplement in my opinion.
LO and Stront I reckon should still only be made from refining ice blocks

People who complain about ice mining, here's a question to you!
Do you mine ice?
I mine ice sometimes. I put park my Orca and exhumers to icebelt, choose block of ice and start drilling. While ice is mined I either chat with my corpmates, surf the Web or read a book or even watch telly. Move ice from exhumers to Orca when they are full. Sometimes I like to do things in eve that doesnt need much effort, relaxing kinda things. Sometimes I like to go gunz blazing on other players / rats. If you dont like mining ice dont do it! And if you are not doing it don't complain about it.

*ccp removes ice*
/me watches thousands if pos across the galaxy run out of fuel and luaghs as he steals all the pos modules in sight
But seriously please make a constructive post and not capitalize every other word next time kk?
Yes is is heavily macro'd, but so is roid mining. Yes it is unprofitable, but we need it for pos. Yes it is boring, but so is normal mining. Lastly, since when has CCP followed up on their claim of excellence? /me notices we are in 'EVE Incursion update.' Nevermind.

Ice belts look great, BUT yeah minnig (especially ice) is just terrible game design.
I'd rather see some Automated Mining Structure that send drones from a POS to an ice belt personally.
That way you still have ice and its products as part of the game, but you can remove the players doing it completely. It could also give some smaller targets for gangs to go shoot up enemy mining drones etc.

in principle good but PI does have too low skill requirements for that every newb and his child could go and harvest ice products then and the price would probably go down extremely making POS easy to maintain

So CCP should remove it because YOU don't want to spend the time doing it? You can always pay someone else to do a job you don't want to.
Yes mining in general is a fairly uneventful activity, but sometimes that is good. I recently graduated so this no longer applies, but it was great being able to get a little income and be able to log into EvE while doing my homework. Even now that I no longer have homework, sometime I like to log onto EvE just to idle in chat and talk to my in game buddies, combat is too eventful for those nights, but mining usually isn't a problem.
Mining is only a chore if you make it one (or join a mining corp). Stop asking CCP to nerf people's playstyles because you don't like them. -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |

First of all +1 to this, fully supported brandy just doesn't taste the same warm!!
Second of all, +1 to OP..ice mining blows. However, as POS owners, we are 100% dependiable on it.
Try this instead...
Why not make mobile stations that you can anchor in an ice belt that will automine it for you? Think about it, have it set so that you MUST link the mobil ice-mining-station to a POS (meaning you can't have one w/out a pos) and only 1 per pos...maybe even have it so your mobile station has to be withen a certian number of light years from said POS. Results? 1) high sec wars can become more intricate as now you can target your enemy's fuel supply 2) byby boring ice mining, hello being able to tell how many pos's a corp has...more planning on invasion, more risk, more reward.
And so we dont lose our belovid macinaws....nerf the ice masses to only produce POS fule...not stront. Stront is only used in wars, and therefore bust be earned via hard labor (like minerals)....mac's can harvest stront.

I don't like this idea. One, I don't like that you CAN'T mine ice without such a module. Perhaps an ice-mining addition to a POS is reasonable but that STILL shouldn't remove the possibility of people mining for it. It is a source of income for some people and not a terrible, cruel one as some have suggested. Second, where exactly would strontium clathrates come from? This is actually quite important because they're NOT just used to reinforce POSes. They fuel some capital modules and they're also material components in the manufacture of some scanner probes. (Possibly in the manufacture of other items as well; scanner probes are the only ones of which I am aware.) Right now, production rates of strontium are largely tied to the extraction of other POS fuel materials and that drives their value in the marketplace. Decoupling them would need to be handled cautiously and I'd like to hear a serious proposal for where they would come from, if not from ice.
