I wonder if anybody has any experience with the theft of an Ocra when the pilot is busy mining in a Hulk beside it. I remember that in this forum someone statet that nobody -exept the owner - could board the Orca when it is target locked. This is not right. We found out that other fleet-members can easily board even if it is target-locked. I never had a chance to try that out with a total stranger. Of course the thief would have to come close enough and leave his own ship to do so. For the price of a Frig or a Cruiser a rigged Orca would still be a good prey. You could even sacrifize a covert-ops Frigate which would enable you to sneak up unseen.

Unboarding your orca is completely safe.
Please leave your empty orca somewhere, mine it full of minerals, and evemail me the location. I will then come and demonstrate how safe it is by not stealing it. Honestly. _______________________ Drink Eau du Nichup«, the taste of heaven. Now available as Nichup Citrus« as well! |

There's no need to "sacrifice" anything.
The hulk is 200k m3, meaning if you fly anything smaller than that, there will be room in the ship maintenance bay for you to scoop your previous ship into your new Orca as you head off into the while black yonder.

Yes of course, I overlooked that...The previous owner of the Orca mining n his nearby Hulk surely would not leave his ship to take the ship of the thief.
I still wonder how easy it is to sneak up, maybe cloaked to get close enough to board the Orca before you are seen. The owner of the Orca could also whithin seconds leave his Hulk, climb into the Orca ans pull the Hulk into the maintenance bay.

It depends how wary they are. If they're not off in a daze while mining then it might be harder to steal it. As they can switch over in a second as long as they have ship locked. Or you could have a corpmate sacrifice a cheap frigate with some ecm's. And then have someone else steal it. As soon as their targeting system goes they'll lose unlock giving the thief plenty of time to jump in and warp away with their new prize. And yes, I have heard of it being done.

The thing is, train for an Orca just for the small chance to steal one? There are better ways to spend your skillpoints, and to make money faster.

I think if I had to choose between jamming bamboo under my fingernails or mining for a few hours in highsec, I'd choose the bamboo. However, I came across: 1) A miner who ejected from his hulk while I was killing it (I had to blow it up because I couldn't fly it and his friends were comming), 2) An abandoned hulk in a belt in amarr (it sat there for several hours before someone else noticed and flew it away)
That made me decide to train hulks. About a month after I finished training the last skill to fly one, I had the opportunity to help steal some ships from a poorly secured POS in a wormhole, I flew three hulks out for a nice profit of ~500m. Had I had hulks trained from day one, I could have made an additional ~400m over the course of a year from the others that I saw.
Neutral Orcas can also pretty useful in pvp, as we found out at the end of this engagement: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1106590

It's like this ...
Joe Blow is flying about when he comes across an unmanned Orca/Hulk/Anything and even though he can't fly it - he may well know someone who can. So he calls over his buddy and his buddy steals it.
Thus - it isn't the odd chance of having someone who happens to know how to fly an Orca stumbling across your fairly expensive, abandoned ship - it is the chance of them knowing someone who can fly it that is your problem.
Given the fact that many people belong to corporations that have Orca support - and the fact that some of these people know each other IRL - you could have someone telephone his buddy and wake him up at Zero Dark Thirty - laughing with glee as he tells him to log in and come on down for his free ship.
As for sneaking up on someone ... pretty much anything can fit a Prototype Cloak. If they can warp in and cloak up before they are noticed - they can just slow boat it over to the Orca while cloaked. When they're close enough for the cloak to shut off - they're close enough to board the Orca.
Now ... one of the things I've done ... is to use a Destroyer with it's tractor beams to pull jet cans to me in mission space - then jumped out of the destroyer into my hauler to empty them - which saves me some time if I've got to fly in from the beacon in mission space. But all I'm risking is a destroyer or an Industrial if someone warps in to that beacon. For the price of an Orca ... I think I'll leave someone in it.
And ... OBTW ... there was a recent jump in Orca prices - when all those Learning Skills were turned into skill points - and a lot of people suddenly decided to train Orcas ... So ... however many there were who could fly an Orca before that - there are more now ...

I've heard silly miners locking the Orca with a Hulk.
Of course, a Hulk has a really short targeting range, and is easily bumped far enough away.

On a more philosophical note, should this actually be consider 'theft'? The pilot has left the ship, so it could be consider an abandoned ship, free for any passer-by to to claim.

Technically it is theft. They bought it with their money. A car sitting on the road is pretty much the same idea...just because it sitting there doesn't mean anyone can come take it. But if your stupid enough to play around like this then you deserve to get it stolen.

Bear in mind that ejecting from a ship incurs a 30 second session change timer, which means you can't board any ships, Jump or dock for the duration. Best option? Bookmark the thing, warp to it in your pod, board and giggle. ---

You can board ships directly without ejecting....

Except in this case it's hardly "parked". More like a car left in the middle of the road in a bad neighborhood with the engine running, the keys in the ignition, and the title sitting on the front seat.
Still technically "theft", but the victim set them self up for it and probably deserves to be laughed at rather than sympathized with. - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |
