Greetings everyone,
It's that time again. My current $30 Logitech headset has officially been turned into trash, and I need a replacement. However, this time I intend on spending up to $150 USD. My only problem is I'm overwhelmed with all the options out there and am afraid I don't know which one suits my needs.
My needs:
- DURABLE: needs to have an extra-strength cord, maybe something wrapped or with that mesh stuff?
- COMFORTABLE: needs to not kill my ears after long (8+ hour) gaming sessions.
- QUALITY MICROPHONE: I don't want to sound like I'm in an elevator, bathroom, or sitting beside a F18 taking off.
Otherwise, I don't care about brands. If it meets the above needs, I'm happy!

I've been looking at the Steelseries 5H v2 USB, Sennheiser PC161, and the Logitech series headsets.
I'm leaning towards the 5H v2, but can't seem to find recent reviews. It seems this headset is from 2006.

Best headset you can get will either be a Razer or a Turtle Beach.

Sennheiser / Steelseries IMO. High quality, comfortable and, unlike anything made by Razer, extremely reliable. (sorry Razer, but I've owned 4 of your mice and only 1 still works)

I dont think thats possible for your budget. Durable, high quality, AND comfortable = Beyerdynamic MMX300.
Ive tried several headsets in the 150 range, and been disappointed every time. A quality microphone is tricky if you want cheap (below 150), Beyerdynamic makes microphones for studios and avionics, all their mics are good. If you want a comfortable headset you either need a light one without cups, or an expensive one like the MMX300. Thats two entirely different sets tho.
I dont recommend "half cups", the ones that only cover half your ear (ie MMX 2). Either go full cover (huge cups, ie MMX300), or dont do cups at all. Do flat ones. Cant stress that enough!
Altenatively, i think "Corsairs HS1" is the closest you will get in your price range. I havent tried it, so cant promise anything. :) The AKG GHS-1 might also be good, but i suspect the comfort is similar to the MMX 2 which i wouldnt recommend. In order to stay on your head they press against your ears, and for me that an irritation over a longer period of time.

I'd recommend them for gaming. Solid design and build, good sound quality for mic -- I've been complemented on that several times by corpies.

Hey Death Clutch,
This would be getting near the upper limit you stated that you could spend, but I've had a pretty good experience so far with the A30 headset from Astro Gaming.
Linkification.
It's not as flimsy as other headsets I've used but I wouldn't call it a heavy duty headset either -- it's got plastic as well as metal parts. This headset came with a nice case I slip them in when I need to travel, quite slim, and the ear pieces swivel anyway so it can go kind of flat when you need it to if you're on the go a lot. It would probably meet your criteria pretty well (Durable, Comfortable, Quality Mic).
My own needs when I found the Astros were pretty much to find a headset that's versatile, can be used with my iPod or my phone (A30s have a mic built into the cord, if you plug that section in), and works with everything I have and use daily. So, that's my iPhone, my laptop, Xbox 360 and PS3. I have a PSP I play sometimes too. Plus the headset has a detachable mic.
For console use, you need to have the mixamp that pairs with the headset. That's where it really shines. I got the wireless mixamp and it works quite well. Otherwise it's just a regular headset.
I haven't had mine for long, so take this all with a grain of salt I suppose, but I'm quite happy with it so far. There are plenty of video reviews of it on YouTube.
Also my older headset (USB) is a Sennheiser, I forget the model number but they're specifically targeting gamers with these on their site, and it's pretty good too.
Someone above recommended getting a Razer headset. I used to have their Barracuda, which sounded great, but they broke pretty easily. That was years ago and hopefully that's less of an issue now. The sound quality was excellent though.

See if you can find a Plantronics DSP-500 set from a surplus store, I have had my pair for nearly 8 years now and they still going very strong. It is no problem at all to pull a 12h session with them.

I have got through 2 Plantronics DSP-500. Great sound quality though. But they both broke.

My Sennheiser USB headset has served me well for 5 years and is still working.
Forget about the USB, though. Make sure to get a headset with analog plugs. All USB soundcards I've tried so far (including Sennheiser's) were crap. Cheap ones (Vivanco) had background noise, and with my Sennheiser USB headset sound suddenly gets completely ****ed up after a few hours of gaming.
Just use your onboard soundcard. It's usually fine.

I have a cheapie radio shack headset that you would use for a cellphone with a boom mic. Plug it into a usb adapter (its not on the website but you can find it in the store) for the output and the mic plug into the soundcard. Works great and I don't have to have both ears covered. I only use it for voice since I have a decent surround sound setup.

I personally recommend the Razer Carcharias Linkage
It's half of your budget. I wear it all day on ops. It never hurts the ears nor is it too hot to wear. The mic has a mhz range that is said to be desired. I researched that **** first. You can't go wrong with it.

I have used these logitech phones for ages and never have i heard a complain about my sound quality. I wouldn't use these for listening music but man I owned in "stereo sound FPS" with these (as in you actually 'heard' which direction foot sounds were coming).  
Well after a thorough search it seems my headphones are so old that they are from a days gone by when USB-things were hot issue so it seems I can't be much of a help here.

Logitec G330, I have two, sound and microphone quality is great, they have USB and jackplug, very light so you can wear them for hours without noticing and last but not least they're like 30 bucks.

Corsair HS1: [H]ardOCP review
This headset has the same chipset on board as the ASUS Xonar D2X (which I use in my PC), in other words, the audio should be pretty amazing. The price is pretty reasonable too at $99,99.

I'd highly recommend: Creative HS-950 USB Gaming Headset.
Really comfortable, absolutely great sound and for only about ú30 here, which is almost $50. I've been really astounded at how good this headset is for it's price tag.
