Slightly cliched to post this on the EVE-O forums but I'm currently reading EVE: The Empyrean Age and am thoroughly enjoying it thus far.

Well being a gamer, when im away i like to read about them, the halo books are great, wonderfly written and having played the game its not very difficutl to picture the battles going on, also read the mass effect books, a bit slower but still interesting getting the backstory to the game. Currently i am readying the dreaming void, a trilogy by some guy or girl sorry don't have the book with me, in short its about some reigion based on a void in the center of the galaxy and a pilgramige, i haven't gotten too far into it b/c of school and all but when i did read it it was quite interesting. just a couple ideas, other than those sorry haven't read any sci fi not based on a video game. |

The best Sci-fi book ever is by Frank herbert and it is the Book Dune. First book in the independent standing book series named Dune. The other books are good too, but cant even get close to the first one.

I just finished The Algebraist by Ian M. Banks a very good space opera. Not sci-fi but highly recommended is World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks.

I will add Ender's Game, Starship Troopers, and Consider Phlebas in the science fiction catagory.
If you want some heavy theoretical anthropology take a gander at this book. I can offer counters to to the primary criticism of the book so if you feel a need of those send me an eve mail.
I can not speak for the other titles in the thread except the following.

Dune should be in your next five books to be honest with the other two not required reading, but very nice additions to the first.
