Why do people prefer to use falloff bonuses for auto cannons and optimal range for artillery?
I mean..wouldn't a bonus to optimal range be beneficial to autocannons so that you can ...y'know have a larger optimal range? I don't get it. |

AC have a tiny optimal range and a big falloff. Boosting a tiny optimal range by any percentage has very little effect, where boosting a big falloff by any percentage will have a big effect.
This is also why you should always use 'short range'/high damage ammo in autocannon - the ammo halves your optimal range, but since it was tiny anyway, that doesn't matter - your falloff remains what it was. |

Woah wait...it doesn't have an effect on your falloff? Wow. Dude, I've been using barrage ammo for a long time now. O_O |

I was referring to the 'short range' standard ammo types (EMP, Fusion, Phased Plasma); they only affect optimal range. Barrage does affect falloff (while leaving the optimal range the same). |

Ohhh okay I get it now. That's why my mentor suggested that I use Barrage ammo. And THAT'S why you suggest using the close range ammo. Because it cuts in half an optimal which is tiny in the first place, and leaves you a nice juicy falloff to work with + nice dmg!
Suhweet. Thanks mate! All things considered, I believe barrage ammo is still probably my best choice. |

barrage is a very good ammo to use a lot of the time, however sometimes when you know you can get in close and pound face (or want to take advantage of a resist hole) some emp, pp, fusion, or even hail can just be awesome
and luckily TE and TC (with optimal scrips) give bonuses to falloff and optimal |

Isn't that a bonus to targeting range instead of gun optimal range? It mentions the "optimal range" bonus under the "targeting" heading - CCP's database entries can be terribly confusing |

Use barrage if you need the range, but if you dont, pretty much always use a faction EMP or other projectile depending on the damage type you want. |

Tracking computers and tracking enhancers bonus falloff, optimal, and tracking speed, adjustable with scripts. It's sensor boosters and signal amplifiers that affect targeting range. Regardless of any categories an attribute might be shown in, the name is what matters.
