Okay I can see the logic in keeping the basic avatar the same once we've designed the character, but shouldn't we be able to take new photos of them in different poses with different backgrounds at any point? And maybe change the hairstyle/colour/makeup/clothes occasionally?

^^^^ Agreed... it would be a shame not to be able to use all these possibilities of the portrait function as much as we can.
Moreover, it would be really nice if the avatar picture could reflect our day-to-day moods, wouldn't it? --------------

Try the Sims 3. i think it might have what you need. This game is Eve, it is about flying internet spaceships and blowing other peoples internet spaceships up. Sarcasm - Because i'm too far away to strangle you. |

We should have dynamic avatars.
As in, blinking and looking around. Maybe changing to some preset expressions every once in awhile.

For YOU perhaps "mr.aviator glasses are cool and I don't care my appearance"
How about making the game not JUST about fracking spaceships with lasers. I've seen enough explosions to last a few lifetimes. |

Signed. This would be a fantastic addition to the game! Being able to have a reason to use that amazing character creator tool to take new screenshots to use as your avatar pic on a regular basis would be awesome.

Yes.
I came up with this perfect "im going to eat you" portrait, but since I'm not hungry all the time I could not justify using it over a more generic portrait that would not frighten children. So I had to simply discard it.

It's called consideration for their playerbase as a whole, animated avatars would consume bandwidth, not just CCP's but the players' too. Not all of us wish to have bandwidth consumed by animated avatars. If they gave us the option to opt out of even static avatars in local then that would be a start. Imagine how it would increase lag when several hundred or possibly even a dozen animated avatars jump into local.
I like the idea of an animated avatar, but would that would be a better option for the show info window on a pilot, they wouldn't look like much in chat channels.

This. Internet spaceship pilots can't be sims. It would just be wrong. They can be forum trolls, though...

Have to remember the character creator was just released. I think this is probably the basic version of it, to get it out, to get mass testing and feedback with it. I wouldn't doubt that stuff will be added to it down the road for Incarna, such as tattoos and so on. I also remember reading somewhere that you will be able to change your characters around whenever you want to in the future. Like I said, give it time, they probably will expand on it in the future.

I thought that's what they 4 portrait shots were for during creation, so we could swap to different faces to match our moods.

Originally by: Eilella Tralente You have to wonder though, what is the point of being able to take four snapshots if you can only use one.
You spend 10 minutes posing. Take a snapshot. Then you try a different pose and take a snapshot. If you don't like your new pose and you have only one snapshot, how do you use the one you liked?
With 4 you have a few more "tries" at getting a good pose.
As to the general idea - yeah, I like it. But if having a pretty animated picture in the top left corner of my Neocom is going to take time away from the core game that EVE represents I'd rather not have it.

CCP servers cache images for a period of time. A cached image got pushed to you on re-log. It may take anything from a few hrs to a day or so to see your new one in game again.
CCP said they were adding a feature SoonÖ to allow changes to Avatars whenever you want. I would guess, probably for a small price.

Yeah why not have all the avatars animated? You could even go the route of having them show "damage" like the little picture of yourself in Doom (I think it was). You know, at 0% shields your avatar has a bloody nose; at 0% armor you've got black-eyes and looking pretty smashed up; at 0% structure your little head could just explode or something?
Of course I'm only half-serious. Animated avatars would be cool. But goddamn, having that big ol' local list all wriggling and moving would drive me f'ing insane in a matter of hours. :P ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "If men make war in slavish obedience to rules, they will fail." ~ Ulysses S. The problem with remakes is that I like my current portrait and don't want to throw it away, I just want to use a different one every now and then but also be able to switch back to this one. I'm ok with the sculpture part, I just want to make more portraits in the photshoot department.
I was talking with corpies the other day about changing avatar according to your mood. I thought it was a great idea!!! It's nice to smile when you feel like it or to show that you feel like screaming!!
