[Gamesutra] Minecraft And The Question Of Luck is a must read story for any PC gaming enthusiast explaining why Minecraft has confounded so many gaming executives and how it came to be such a success.
While I'm not a member of the Minecraft fan club (I've never played), it's fascinating to learn why it has become so successful despite its many failings as seen by conventional gaming media.

I haven't tried it out yet, mostly due to a fear I might like it. I'll give the link a look though soon.

I tried the free version and frankly, I find it's the same as in Sims...no goal, just losing time and nothing to do ... just complete emptiness. Unless I missed something in that game it's seriously boring to me
I looked at some videos on youtube of what you can do including the let's play and nope, to my knowledge, I didn't miss anything. All you do is remove and add blocks of different textures...that's all lol
no explosions, no killing, no strategy just no nothing ????? and people find this fun ??? Playing with my wee wee is more fun than this. --------------------------------------------------

Silly article tbh ...
Nowdays fart apps get more sales than Minecraft, the only reason why Minecraft is so popular is that it is for people with obsessive-compulsive behavior of that kind and you can put interesting videos on youtube. It earns so much money because the threshold for online payment has been reduced much in the past years (through mp3 sales, app stores, Paypal).
It's not such a terribly exciting game design, nor does it prove the gaming industry wrong in any way WoW did for example.
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

I think the person that wrote that review forgot what I believe is one of the most important reasons for its success: the name.
MINECRAFT
It's two syllables, it defines the game perfectly and the second syllable is the same word used at the end of WoW.
Sometimes, you just need to give your product the right name. eg;
Skateboards Hula-hoop Facebook Coca-Cola
And when it comes to games;
Team Fortress Counter Strike Out Run Pac-Man Doom SimCity
Easy to remember name = higher chance of web searches.
And let's not forget, people don't say web search any more, they say 'Google'.
I hope CCP are thinking of renaming Dust 514. No one knows what it means and also, having numbers in a product name is typically a no-no. Unless it's a follow-up to a well established product. iPhone 4, for ex.
Back OT; I played it for a while - it didn't captivate me, but I can see the appeal.
