Really? Because that's one of the chemicals I was referring to that became legal in Sweden
Good to hear that they are banning that poison again

Well Sweden ain't what it used to be that's for sure
There is in fact no EU "ban". In the UK Tartrazine was phased out in 2009. Various other EU countries have done the same, some haven't. There's a perfectly good replacement colourant which doesn't have the known adverse effects Tartrazine does, but of course money talks, especially money in brown envelopes passed to politicos.
If politicians weren't so corrupt we'd have seen aspartame (Nutrasweet) banned in drinks years ago - yeah there are alternatives and some are cheaper too. Its still there in pretty much everything produced by US multinationals and so are a lot of the corrupt politicos. Oddly some US companies like Walmart (Asda) operating in the UK removed aspartame from ALL of their own brand products years ago. Walmart isn't exactly noted for being great at recognising anything other than their own profit margins so go ask yourselves why would they do it - especially when they had to pay more for the products than their arch-rival Tesco, and sell it at a lower price?
Politicians don't give a crap about "public health". Nor do the people they appoint to look after "public health".

Edited by: sarah mcjimmy on 04/02/2011 17:09:47 Strange. Importing Irn Bru in to the US is banned for the same reasons. As to what addition to the drink it is banned for, I don't know.
Mountain Dew Energy is horrible. Tastes just like Sprite.

I didn't know Irn Bru was banned in the US! I see nothing wrong with a drink that is luminous orange and boasts that it is made of with metal. I tried a can of Mountain Dew here in Scotland and it was absolutely horrible. I don't know if it was the horrible version the op was talking about. I like energy drinks so thought it would be ok but it was really sweet and tasted like chemicals.

No its not.
The reason its "banned" is because it contains the food colourant Tartrazine which is linked to hyperactivity, ADHD, anxiety, migraines, clinical depression, blurred vision, itching, general weakness, heatwaves, feeling of suffocation, purple skin patches, and sleep disturbance.
Its estimated (by the FDA) that 360,000 USA citizens are adversely affected by Tartrazine intolerance with the numbers increasing year on year. Its mandatory to declare the presence of Tartrazine in all food/drink products sold in the USA and its one of the increasingly few areas that the FDA DO enforce rigorously.
You want to drink crap like that then you go right ahead.
I feel like I would have seen that at some point. (looking at wikipedia it is yellow #5, which I was aware of some effects of, which apparently are myth)
and at the store I can get Mt. Dew throwback too

Being American and living in Europe, I can honestly say there is only one soda I miss: Dr. Pepper. Never was a huge fan of Coke.
Everything else is pretty crap anyway...

Irn Bru was banned after it became apparent that long term exposure can lead to Faux Scots Syndrome, or Och-aye-the-noo as it is more commonly known.
There were outbreaks of this debilitating condition all over the USA which lead to widespread consumption of porridge, the wearing of string vests and ginger wigs and a huge increase in the distribution of deep-fried anything that can't climb out of a bucket.
Even the yanks have some standards.

I don't really drink fizzy drinks but I love Dr Pepper, its definitely my favourite. However you can buy it pretty much anywhere here in the UK, not sure if it's different on mainland Europe then.

I used to drink a lot of Mello Yello years ago. It's pretty good. It's a slightly sweeter flavor than Dew, but otherwise pretty darn close, I think.
Some data for you. Best of Luck dealing with your plight!
