Its an investment. That first billion covers the cost, anything else is just bonus. Plus, you can sell it later and get nearly all your isk back unless the market is just saturated.

You are repeating yourself from the first point: Maelstrom is cheaper = Mach is more expensive. Logicly, both statements are true. And you can get by with an entire set of T2 800, T2 armor tank modules, and T1 rigs with a cheap faction AB (might run you 50-100 million on top of the hull) Faction might be better for a shield tank and using artillery, I just haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

Buy mach, have fun, sell when you are done. I still have mine and won't get rid of it, only really use it for one mission but the thing is just that much fun to have around (Pushes 500ms a second, ZOOM ZOOM! ). The speed alone is a selling point, you get missions done faster and get to the next one quicker which means more isk being earned over a longer time if you can squeeze in one extra mission a day.

Eventually you will have more isk then you need, so spend it on a toy and 200 DPS is more then the Maelstrom has . Don't over pimp the damn thing and don't mouth off in local/mail to earn a wardec (cheack you dec mails regularly), it won't get ganked as you fear. Hell, how long do you think that 30 billion Paladin was being flown before it got shot up last year? Probably awhile, the guy was over confident/didn't care if he lost it.
I was against getting a Mach, but once I got it missions got more fun and managable. Eventually you get really good with it and shouldn't loose it unless you do something really stupid (like earn a wardec or screw up a massive trigger)
