After seeing a wide variety of contradictory translations of Plato, I'm pretty disappointed in translators. Perhaps a native speaker could tell me more about the Arabic language.
The book Red Mars is set in the future and therefore does not reflect the present in linguistics, but the way Arabic is described in the book is very interesting, and I'm curious about how much truth there is to it:
p426: "He relaxed in the flow of Arabic, still and always awash with ambiguity: lily, river, forest, lark, jasmine, words that might refer to a waldo hand, a pipe... or perhaps just to lily, river, forest..."
This seems a little ridiculous to me, because I figured nouns would be at least somewhat fixed. So I'm curious about how accurate this is. I'm pretty ignorant about this, so please don't troll me hardcore. :)

Love the Mars trilogy more than anything I've ever read  In answer to your question it seems as though Arabic languages are very metaphor heavy and that Kim's description is fairly accurate. Try reading the Quran sometime, the use of metaphoric language is simply beautiful.

u and I could get in to a discussion about arab language being beautyful or not.
but u lost years ago. i made up my mind alrdy. arab sucks. and the languae sounds like monkeys in distress.
and whole ****ing region should diaf.
