Can someone help me to understand what occured around the end of august, beginning of september that caused nocxium price to climb so high? I flipped back through the market pages to that time frame and found a thread talking about nox prices being manipulated, but in the end I didn't see anything pointing to any one change or another to cause it to go from around 100 to nearly 600. I think it started to level off for a bit and then the SP refund hit and drove up ship demand, but why is it staying so high?

I'm guessing the fact that nocxium is a "low sec mineral" doesn't help to let the price go down : - High sec miner/bots only get low quantities in pyroxere - Null sec miners only get some in crokite & dark ochre (which is quite less valuable to mine than Arkonor, Bistot and maybe mercoxit) - Jaspet, Hedbergite & Hemorphite have the most of it but they only rarely appear in high sec (in grav sites) and not many people are mining in low sec _ Ore Table | PI Profits |

This is a supply-side issue
Most of minerals (except trit, pyer, mex and some isogen) come from loot processing, mainly drone alloy reprocessing (coming from 0.0 drone regions). Alloys cannot give enough nocxium to cover manufacturing needs, just like trit/pyer/mex. But Nocxium is scarce in highsec, and isn't frequent in 0.0 as Nikolai said. 0.0 miners earn more money when they mine arkonor and other stuff, which give mostly zydrine and megacyte.
So there is a gap between two blocks : - tritanium, pyerite, mexallon, isogen : mined in empire from veldspar, scordite, plagioclase and omber (a/k/a "low-ends"). - zydrine and megacyte : mined in 0.0, or generated by reprocessing Nocxium is in that gap : not enough Nocxium in pyroxeres (highsec mining), not enough in 0.0, not enough in reprocessing. Nocxium supply is limited by the structure of mineral supply (highsec versus 0.0/drone alloys).
Since august there are huge mineral consumption for different reasons. Many capitals (supercarriers and their victims) are being destroyed each day. Sovereignty structures are being build by players, etc. So nocxium prices exploded, and supply didn't increase to compensate. -------------------------------- Fulbert. Miner - Industrialist |

When the NPC rat loot drops got changed, less nocxium was introduced into the mineral supply via loot reprocessing. So, since more nocxium was being delivered to the market through mining, and nocxium is so much more rare in ore than in loot, its price went up to reach the demand.

Edited by: Nomad IV on 06/02/2011 16:15:50 There is high demand for Maelstrom and Apocalypse ships because the game mechanics made this necessary for big blob fights. Most the goons changed to Maelstrom.

And the noctis, which requires a relatively large portion of nocxium, was the last major factor in pushing up the price.

Originally by: CCP Chronotis You might notice nocxium is fast becoming valuable and this comes from ores largely dominant in low sec. This was done by decreasing supply from other sources so there isnt always a need to increase supply (though that seems obvious to give more, although here, less=more).

Edited by: Ruareve on 06/02/2011 20:22:17 So the change to loot tables, adjustments to alloy drops by drones, an increase in null wars, and spike in ship demand have all combined to make a previously not so rare mineral a much more rare mineral that is rarely mined because it's in low sec.
Almost makes ya want to go to low sec and mine... until you think of all the hassle that entails and decide to just run some missions instead.
Also, thank you for the responses.

My mistake, thanks for fixing it.
On that note, anyone know what the isk/hour is on the low sec mins? I just picked up a bunch of nocx and was laughing at the fact it is closing in on zydrine.

More accurately, the miners who could pull off low sec mining aren't stupid. They can get a better deal in 0.0 space. And the bold but stupid end up generating killmails. I have mined in low sec before, it's just not worth my time, even with today's mineral prices.

Edited by: Gdemami on 07/02/2011 15:25:14 If Nocxium is so short of supply and if so few people mine in low sec, can someone explain to me why Hemorphite dropped in price before last summer that much and the price did not go up since, even after the loot drop changes and stuff?
What else is keeping the price of Hemorphite low?

Obvious strawman is obvious. There is no advantage to mining in low-sec, the risk vastly outweighs any increased reward. Fear has nothing to do with it, that myth might cut some ice with the group think of C&P but not here.
