Only a week or so into the game. Have set an Eve-Mon plan to train for a vexor cruiser. Have been following it with a few deviations of skills along the way.
Is this the thing to do? Is this tool a reliable guide for a new pilots?
Many thanks.

Evemon is probably the best and easiest to use, it is totally reliable and great secure software.
Check out Eve HQ, it may be your style, if you want something more advanced.

Evemon + eft are must have tools for all eve players. Your doing it right. Don't be intimidated by the "Mass" of skills you need and feel like you need ALOT of SP.
SP != pilot skill. Signature removed for not being EVE related. Zymurgist |

Good question by OP. The only downside I've seen with EVEMon is that prices for ships and other stuff seem tp bay way (!) lower than they are on the in-game market. A ship in EVEMon for approx 1,5 mill is often 10x more expensive in the game. Dunno why it's like that tho.

Reliable - yes.
However newer players should be careful when following "recommended certificates" training. Usually it has lots of skills that you can postpone training for later.

Evemon is just a tool to help with planning. It just tells you how long stuff takes and how you can optimize attributes in the long term. Nothing more, but nothing less.

Way to undersell Evemon. Can't even recall how many times this thing saved me from going out with outdated clones. Not to mention empty skillqueues.

Its not EVEMon that is wrong. The prices they quote are the prices on the database for the given item. For anything that is sold by NPCs compare the price in EVEMon to the price in game - if it is something that isn't bought constantly the price will be 90% of the EVEMon price (as NPC prices can vary by +/- 10% depending on demand which effectively means just about everything costs 90% of base price if bought from NPC).
The prices for things by ships are in the actual game are governed by what people want to sell them for as NPCs don't sell them. The way to find the base price is to see what the quoted platinum insurance payout for the ship is.

Only thing I've noticed wrong with Evemon (may be a misconfigure on my part?) is that training tends to take double the time Evemon says it will. Like Evemon says a certain skill will take 9hrs to train from Level 2-3 but in game queue says 18hrs.

Make sure your attributes in EVEMon match your actual attributes in game.

I'd like to toss out another plug for Eve HQ. Eve HQ is more like a suite of various tools instead of just one. --Vel

I believe the current evemon version still assumes double training speed for characters under a certain sp threshold. At least I've noticed that on one of my characters. For the actual completion check the api is used afaik so its not a big issue but it could possibly distort skill training time on your plans. I heard you can download a 'release candidate' which should have that fixed I guess but it won't autoupdate (yet) you have to do it manually. --

I don't know when Eve HQ changed this but it now requires both my user ID AND my account name. I don't know when they changed that as I haven't used EHQ in a while. I will say this.
DO NOT GIVE ANYONE YOUR ACCOUNT NAME!
Any user or 3rd party app you give this info to can get into your account much easier if you give both of these bits of info. If you give them all that info, you have given them 2/3rd of the info in what they need to hack your account. The only thing left for them to do is to brute force your password and voila they have your account.
I know there will be all kinds of folks who will tell me I'm wrong but look at it this way.
Your account has 3 stages of security. All of which YOU are responsible for keeping secure.
#1 Your account name. This is what you log into eve with. THIS IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KEEP SECURE NEXT TO YOUR PW
#2 Your USER ID. This is the character identifier number that ties your character(s) to your account. This is the 7 or 8 digit number (depending on how old your account it) you give to 3rd party apps along with your API.
#3 Your password.
Your account name can have 3 USER ID's attached to it. These are your main and your alt.
When you give EHQ (or ANY 3rd party app) your Account Name, and User ID('s), you have given 2 stages of your security away to people you don't know You have let them know what your user id AND you account name is. All that is left is to figure out the password and they gotcha.
While I am sure that the creators of EHQ have no intention of hacking your account, who knows how secure their account system is? How secure is their database from outside attack from a 3rd (4th?) party attack and hack? If EHQ ever gets hacked, then whoever gave BOTH their user ID AND account name are much more susceptible to account hacking.
Evemon is more secure IMHO as it doesn't require your account name to tie your User ID's together to an account name. All it needs is a user ID which it or the creators can't use to tie to an account name. therefore only 1 stage of the 3 security stages to begin a hack with have been given away if they ever get hacked and your info is stolen and now for inevitable tl;dr Don't EVER give your ACCOUNT NAME to EHQ (which it REQUIRES TO USE)or ANYONE! It's a major security hole. You are responsible for your account security. Dont Compromise It!

I use Eve HQ and Evemon as well. Eve HQ does not need your account name to function. The Account Name it is looking for is one of your choosing to help you identify it. You can setup more than one account to run in Eve HQ.
They have a definition for the Account Name field: "Please also enter a name by which you can identify this account (usually the name of the main character on the account)."
That is NOT your account name. I just wanted to mention that.
