Why do Colleges (colleges only) block Facebook? I imagine bandwidth arguments would come up? well, I have a chance to discuss why Facebook should be unblocked at my school WITH the president, and IT admin and others...and essentially i want to address and rebut as many arguments as possible before they arise
Bandwidth issues? (my school has one of the best servers out there, and no more than 2000 students and probably way less computers..- its a tech school)

There isn't a reason Facebook should be available anywhere. -

1. Because you're at College. You're supposed to be studying your choice subjects, not gabbing to friends and catching up on how many of them broke a nail in the last 24 hours.
2. Because of Bandwidth. Unblocking facebook also means unblocking all of the content on facebook. The plethora of facebook games and applications. Just because your College has awesome servers, doesn't mean the internet line they are using is top grade, or even cheap.
3. Because of common sense, and the same reasons Mobile Phones are usually to be turned off during class times, and you're not allowed to sit gabbing to friends all day. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Edited by: Barakkus on 08/02/2011 17:54:46 lol the irony...Facebook was originally designed for college students to use to connect with each other...as time progressed it stopped being education based...now the colleges are blocking it

1) True, rather its a trade school, no more than 2000 ppl between faculty and students, and ALOT less computers... At least at MY trade school- this wouldn't really be a problem. If you aint doing the work, instructors well kick you out of, fail you, send you home. So at least in my school this wouldn't be the case...
2) didnt think about the facebook games... Yet wouldnt other sites pose just as much bandwidth issue? (youtube, other you tube type sites, etc)? from what i gather, our service at the school, including top of the line servers, should also have top of the line ISP service too.
3) sure- common sense, and yet even though instructors tell folk to turn off cellphones, some forget, or dont comply, or the instructors phone goes off..

We block facebook and myspace at my job due to security concerns and people will just play on facebook/myspace all day long.

Thats odd. Do they block cell phones, email, and other forms of electronic social networking?

Nope, YOu can access email, YouTube, veoh, and and such not just school email but gmail, Hotmail, yahoo, etc.
Cellphones- The only place that could ban them would be like a military academy... next would be a private school, but all they can do really is tell you to turn it off or get an F for the day... At any higher educational institute, the average age is likely over 18, hence- all adults anyway... (theoretically speaking)
Okay, bandwidth- how would I counter that claim- assuming top of the line fiber optics? with high end ISP service?

I think you understand my point regarding other unbanned social networking tool.
As for the other bits, websites dont really use that much bandwidth. Youtube, if anything, should be using far more bandwidth than facebook.. I dont see why the data transfer of facebook itself should be very high.

Do you have legitimate arguments FOR having access to FB ready to present to them? I mean, it's their network, they can block whatever they want. It's up to you to provide justification for allowing access to FB on an edu network.
And I wouldn't recommend something like, " Well, you allow access to YouTube, WoW, etc.". Your friends might not like you if you get those blocked as well.

Not always true, depending on the school.

Facebook may be blocked at my college, but that doesn't stop me from using their bandwidth to play EVE during class. _________________________________________________ If at first you don't succeed, you're not Chuck Norris |

If I was your lecturer I would let you have facebook, then start a homework group and make it mandatory for you to become friends with the homework group.
I would then know exactly who was online during class time, who failed to do their homework because they were "at this awesome party dude" and many other interesting facts about my students
Be careful what you wish for my friend.

Thats more or less what we do. Our section here has a group on facebook where we put events for assinments and tests and docs for review. Completely off the radar of course. Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. |
