Talking of Jovians, did CCP take the race name from a short story 'Unintentional Victory' by and well known sci-fi author? |

As far as I know Jovian is another word for alien, I've herd documentery program use the word, I think it was refering to life that may exist in Io's oceans...

jovian means 'of jupiter', i.e jupiter's moons are jovian satellites, and if something comes from jupiter it is said to be of jovian origin.
i think ccp probly used the word simply because it sounds good...

it could even be that the race origonated from colonies on those moons ... the people of eve know the word even if they don't remember the planet __________________________________________

Nothing is solid, everything is speculation.
That said, the concept of having DISCORPOJOVIAN in the future exites me.

Yep, that's what the story is about. Men on Ganymede send robots to Jupiter to see the Jovians. |

Jovians can easily mean inhabitants of Io. Io+vios(=~life)=Iovios (Down and dirty greek) =Jovian (in the english translation)

At the time of Eve's launch, they were running a marketing tool known as the Jovian Key. This would let you choose the Jovian race during the character creation period. There were rumours that this would be implemented in Shiva, but I think that was pushed back to the next big patch.

Edited by: Vicker Lahn'se on 28/01/2005 14:26:38 Excuse me, but you guys are forgetting that the planet Jupiter was named after something as well. Jupiter was the king of the Roman gods. He was also known as Jove.
While in most science fiction Jovian would mean from the planet Jupiter, this is not the case in Eve. If you look up the word Jovian, it means similar to the god Jupiter. Calling a race Jovian is another way of saying that they are god-like.
Edit: Also, the Jovian disease doesn't kill you. The Jovian disease just means that you can't have children. It's a result of each Jovian having such different DNA from one another due to all their genetic manipulation.

This would explain the silly foppish exclamation of "By Jove, I think he's got it!" Another mystery of life unlocked.
Oh, btw,
Quote: The consequence is the dreaded Jovian Disease. Genetic in nature, it is not infectious to other races, but among Jovians it causes a depression so deep and serious that the victim loses the will to live, and death results within a few days or weeks.

My theory. High experienced players will be able to go Jove at some point, but be restricted to Jove space. There-by leveling the playing field for lower experienced players.

Well...Partially true... -Jove (Giove in italian) was a God, not a king. -Jove is only the translation of Zeus (Greece's king of gods)
And finally, Jovian or Martian just means exo-life, i.e. not having the same terrestrial origine... (\_/) (O.o) (> <)=Oveur (proof) "Jumping 50 systems I can like, have sex 150 times during that period" |

UndraMundur - I think a safe answer is "not this year" ... more than likely, not next year either ... so I'd be worried about something other than Jovians. |

They should have it like this:
"BIG NEWS!!: Today the supreme counseler of the Jove Empire has contacted all the other leaders from each major Faction in the EVE universe. They are asking for a deal, they have finally found a "cure" to their disease. I have had the grandest of privileges to speak to a Jovian to ask him how this procedure is accomplished, and here is goes. A physcial human body must be sacrificed to extract the known DNA cells out of the body so it can be implemented into the engineered jove body. By doing this it will fix the broken Jove DNA and they will slowly begin to regain thier basic instincts and ultimately in time cure their great depression. Once the process is complete the participant will awaken in a new body and will have all the physcially and mentally advanced abilities of a Jove. They only want to highest and most prestige of the other races to be canidates in this huge project.
They will agree to open their space to be traveled and their technology be researched as a token of gratitude for any race willing to do such a thing."
thats about how far i got, give me a day and i could probably write a whole book about it. tell me what you all think (you too CCP) -----------------
