First off, how does picking fights in low sec affect security status, and if it dips real low what is the best way to bring it back up?
Second, if I want to fly a fast but short range frigate should I slowly narrow the orbit or burn straight in at top speed and hope the lack of transversal doesn't cause too much damage?
Third, if I'm gonna be mostly armor tanking what is a good point to bug out if I'm not scrambled?
Gonna be flying mostly cheap, generic rifter fits with autocannons. Don't mind losing ships, in fact I expect it, but I'd like to know how to decide it's time to leave. Prolly gonna poke around lowsec looking for other frigates and maybe some cruisers. |

Edited by: Othran on 11/02/2011 11:51:49 1) It'll drop. If you don't kill the pod then it'll drop slowly. Podkilling makes it drop FAST. The only way of bringing sec status back up quickly is ratting - ideally kill a BS, jump system and kill another, jump system then another and so on;
2) Depends how close you are and what you're engaging. Try to keep transversal up if you can, sometimes you'll need to burn straight at them to get tackle;
3) You probably won't get the chance to leave. Frigate fights are short affairs - well under a minute usually, sometimes only 20-30 secs. You'll know by looking at the other ship's shield/armour/hull whether you're going to win or not. Be prepared to fight in structure and fit a DCU2
Edit - search for Wensleys new Rifter guide. Pretty much all your questions are answered there.

If you are just looking to learn basic PVP in Rifters, don't bother with low sec right away. You can get more than enough 1v1's in high sec just by hanging out at the various trade hubs and popping out jet cans to get fights with other frigs and even some t-1 cruisers.
You will get far more experience with basic PVP this way and it will be really easy to replace those lost ships and try again. When out roaming in low sec, I might find 2 or 3 fights in 30 mins or I might go 2 days with out finding one.
No need to worry about trying to hunt down fights when you can get a lot more experience much faster just playing out side a station.

You could also try RVB - two corporations constantly at war for the sake of low impact PVP. Fleet battles, 1v1, etc.

If you're worried about your sec status, try joining one of the facrtion warfare militias. Killing pilots in the two enemy militias will not penalise you or (importantly in a frigate) expose you to gategun fire, and you have the option of going after neutrals if you like anyway.
Also, this has the advantage of possibly teaming you up with a group of like-minded pilots rather than being restricted to solo work.

Like you, I am new to pvp. I found that while there are many guides out there (like Westley's Rifter Guide), there is too much information to take in all at once.
My solution was the Punisher Plan. I bought 20 Punishers and began the process of losing them all in PvP. I also started a record (in this case, a blog: flight-of-dragons.blogspot.com ) of all my fights, so I could review what worked, and what didn't.
The whole process has been hugely helpful. Rather than trying to absorb a whole guide at once (which also means trying to adopt someone else's pvp style), I have been learning pvp one lesson at a time. While I have a great deal left to learn, I am already a far better pvp'er than I once was.
Good luck, and good hunting.

This is an excellent advice. Buy a pile of t1 frigate rifters, punishers, merlins.. whatever you are able to fly. Fit all the ships up and start losing them. By the time youŠve lost the pile youŠll be a better pvper then those who go by a guide but lack the experience.
Concerning what hubs are good for pvp IŠd try Rens. ItŠs close to the minmatar FW area, there are many people in local but you can still actually have a chatt with cool people there without having to read all that faction/scam spam. And for the love of god, dont go to Jita.
