Ok, serious questions here. Let's call it a poll.
If you were a carebear (I know it pains you to think about it, but let's JUST PRETEND FOR A 'MO and be honest with your answers) and you were offered a ransom to save your ship and implants (about to be podded by a Heavy Interdictor).
1. Would you pay the ransom for 50mil. (let's say implants and ship was worth 200mil.) 2. What do you think are the odds the pirate will let you go? 2a. What things would you look at before paying... kill record?, Bio? etc. 3. Should your agreement with the "spokesman" carry for the group? 3a. Do you think it will carry through for the group. 4. What things should you do/say to insure you get away after payment? 5. If they don't let you go, and pod you anyway after payment, what should you do or not do. 6. Would you change your answers above depending on 0.0, WH, or LS space?
Thanks for your answers, and please leave relevant experiences below...

Never pay ransoms. The corps that actually honour them are in the vast minority.

Haven't ever been in the situation, but here is what I think I would do (if I didn't panic haha):
1) Yes (if I had that much). 2) 50/50 (without knowing the person). 2a) Bio and corp. However, I will likely still pay no matter what I see. 3) IMO yes. 3a) 50/50. 4) I would try "half now, half after I get away" (and pray they don't think I'm just buying time for friends to show up). I would also NOT smack talk. And I would not say anything in local once private chat has been started. 5) Don't smack talk, it just makes you look silly. Really, just live with the loss, and hope you didn't lose all of your ISK. 6) Not really. Though in WH, I might just ask them to pod me anyway, depending on if I had a way back to Empire.

Most of the serious pirating corps out in lowsec enforce a strickt policy of honoring the ransome, with the isk payd back if by some missunderstanding killed after pay'd, and in more serious cases even booting their members who repetedly don't uphold pay's ransoms.. not all are like that ofc, but most of them i know of operate that way.

Just point them to your reputation thread and then if they want the 50m they'll let you go.

Nah. I'd self destruct my ship, and tell them if they didn't pay me the ransom which they were demanding of me to pay that I wouldn't stop the self destruct.

There is no such thing as ransoming. It's a scam. Basically you scam some poor SOB out of 50mil or so before you kill him. The people who "honor" ransoms are carebears.

Well those "carebares" are the only reason anyone bothers to pay ransoms. So be grateful.

People pay ransoms for the same reason people fall for contract scams in Jita.

As a pirate; my answer is don't pay. I always honored my ransoms and only flew with people who did the same, but the fact is, you just don't know. I don't even bother ransoming people anymore. I just kill them and hope they have nice loot.

1. Yes, if I knew I could not otherwise get out of the situation AND i was confident they would honor the ransom. 2. Most pirates I've been bested by honored the ransom (although they had a cheap demand) 2a. Honestly, most ransoms occur so fast you don't have time for this. 3. Yes. 3a. See #2. 4. Once paid, you should be spamming warp to a gate/station. 5. Do - Remember the gang's members, and don't pay them again. Don't - make a thread and ***** about it. This is EVE. HTFU. 6. In 0.0 or against war targets, I'd never pay. In WH space, I'd asked them to pod me. Lowsec is the only place i'd consider paying.
My corporation has a designated 'hostage negotiator', usually the FC. The FC invites the target to our ransom channel which has a MOTD along the lines of "turn off all modules, stop your ship, pay the ransom and you go free." If the victim pays, we keep the target locked while our fleet warps off. (While we are waiting for payment, we continue shooting just enough to keep shields/armor from regenerating. We will neut if we can).
If they do not pay, we destroy the ship, scramble the pod and begin the ransom process all over again

I never pay ....at worst that's just throwing good money after bad; at best you are making yourself a future target. Though I did have a pirate pay me one time... because I wished him a good night after he blew my ship and I got away in my pod. |

Edited by: psycho freak on 14/02/2011 03:03:14 most lo-sec pvper's iv flown with honor randsoms but normly only randsom pods, ships are like piniata's never know wot they drop
some lo-sec corps make isk from camps and such so it is in they intrest to accept the randsom you do get a few trigger happy guys who will pop your pod b4 u get chance to awnser
we normly offer a 30m fee per pod unless we think u got imps then could go up to 500m
best advise is IF you get the option of randsom dont move / dont smack / dont take to long to decide if you gona pay or not
but way i see it 30m is nowt and worth the risk just to not start your jurney from your med clone bay - the clone price
we get a few who smack wen randsomed and the guys just laugh on coms post the tears on our foroum for lulz :)
my advise if it resnoble price wot u got to loose your dead anyways if dnt try

If EVE was set up so that it was far more attractive for pirates to ransom than blow up a ship and pod then you might see more ransoming. Pirate by definition: One who robs at sea or plunders the land from the sea without commission from a sovereign nation. That means profiting is of the utmost concern to the pirate.

Make that "too bad salvagers can't scream", and I'm all for it. Would love to hear the orchestra of carebear tears all over Empire. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |

We rarely ransom. As half the time the carebears just self destruct.
The few occasions where we have offered, and the carebear has paid, we have honored it.

They have to create terrorists first, so they have someone to not negotiate with later. -
