Ok, so I've seen these in missions and I've seen it at the WH C5 site "Core Garrison" sitting on top of a Talocan static gate. Does anyone know what this thing does? Obviously it has something to do with the Talocan/WH space mystery... |

You've stumbled across the greatest Eve mystery there is: The LCO Spatial Rift.
In all honestly, I'm pretty sure the LCO stands for Large Collidable Object, and it's probably there for the simple reason it's perdy.

I've played around with one in either a Zephyr or a pod (I forget which) and could not get it to do anything. Since they connote some kind of traveling, I was hoping maybe I could get a "warp button" to pop up in the Selected Items interface UI, but no luck. My thought was that I could somehow activate this as an Acceleration Gate or something. But because they do not seem interactive, I wonder if they are nothing more than ornamentation at this point. Can anyone give an example of *any* Large Collidable Object having associated game mechanics other than being able to target lock them?
Large Collidable Structures, on the other hand, can change state and drop a loot can if they blow up. LCS also have Overview icons.
The site, Strange Energy Readings, also has graphics that look similar to Spatial Rift LCOs with flavor text that talks about "immense matter displacement." They may not be the same thing, though.
-------------- Indecision is a terrible thing.
...or is it?

In the early parts of the Epic Arc, you chase a "sleeper drone" in K Space, through a couple of spatial rifts it is using to navigate the system. So, yes, it is a very pertinent part of the storyline, all the recent graphics enhancements have seemed to increase the number of these spacial rifts, especially in mission sites.
